what is the difference in sound? More/less bass? Better sound stage? More comfortable?
More breathable? Which kind do you prefer?

Should be "Closed ", damn fat fingers.

Generally open back has better sound stage and separation and often is less fatiguing and closed back has more bass. There are some great open back and closed back headphones. It is more of in what kind of environment you are listening in and what you prefer as every one likes different things and this applies to sound as well.

I have closed back, on-ear (not over ear) KEF M500's. I like them because in-ear bother me and fall out, while over-ear make me all sweaty underneath. The open back ones don't seem to be any cooler for me. These M500 got a really good review here, appearing just after I'd bought them at 1/2 price ($150) on a sale that's never repeated, though often available for $250 or $200. These have good bass but not over-the-top. What I like most is you have to be right next to me to know they're playing, and that's why I bought them. Perfect for enjoying my music without bothering anyone else.

In my experience what tyhjaarpa wrote is generally true. Open back do seem to offer a "bigger room" though it's weird that I've never found a headphone of any kind that replicated how loudspeakers present. Music from all headphones seems to come from above, in a way.

I have two sets of Koss Pro-4aa headphones. My original transducers are apparently all that remain of my 1972 pair, after I sent that pair back in a body bag with $9 for s&h last year - great lifetime warranty. They look the same externally as the new set I bought ~five years back. The old transducers are more mellow, but still have excellent piano overtones. I sprung the headband on the newer ones - it helps with my large noggin, which is still too tight in the rebuilt units' headband. I left the new ones over a weekend "on" my Tivoli Model One AM/FM table radio - literally - that may have been too much. Maybe a few books would be better for the warranted pair. I like the Pro-4aa's because of their fluid fillled cushions - great seal for ambient noise. They are - like me - old school. My 'new school' headphones are thirty year old Sony MDR V6's - two pair of the same vintage. Sadly, they went through a dozen or more OEM Sony ear cushions before I discovered some great aftermarket units - no more walking around with black earcushion residue stuck to my ears! They have a pronounced bass - not as low as the Koss - but more midrange to treble - slurred "S's". Marc Cohn's original CD is a great source to evaluate headphones (Played on an Onkyo C-7030 and driving the headphones from my Emotiva A-100 BasX amp's front panel headphone jack.). The Koss seem flatter in response with a lower bass extension. Even the mellow old rebuilt ones reproduce the triangles well - as if 'out of the darkness'.

I've done a lot of shortwave listening over the last fifty-odd years - and the Koss Pro-4aa's are my favorite there, too. The closed back over the ear style pretty well isolates you from ambient noises - and others from you, too. The Sony's are closed back but sit on the ears with a lesser seal than the Koss'. The foam pads - a la Sennheiser used - have never felt or sounded 'right' to me. Actually, I find the sound quality, separation, and even sound stage better over headphones than even my Heresys!

I like listening to headphones when I want to go either very soft and easy on the volume, or, turn it up and blaze away. One difference in open back headphones and closed ones has to do with your buddy in the seat next to you. Open back headphones leak sound in to the room and if you blaze away with the volume you are effectively broadcasting to anyone near you.

If you listen alone, or away from others, its not an issue. On an airplane, its an issue. In a shared room, its an issue.

Sound quality is subjective as you have noticed. Headphones tend to be personal choices and I have all kinds. I think I have probably 1/2 dozen pairs, of all different types. I like 'em all.

If it's OK for others in the room to hear the music I'm listening to...I ditch the cans and turn on the loudspeakers.

To my 71 year old ears, good headphones sometimes sound better. They sure are clearer.
