My standard reply is : is it worth it to you to spend $250 for two pieces of used gear? (I assume its used since someone wants to sell it).

I don't think there's anything especially unique (either negative or positive) about the choices. So, do you need what he's selling and does it scratch an itch you have?

If its worth it to you....just a peek at ebay shows that's about the going price for the 545 alone.

Be sure your answers don't mess up the Quote brackets....your post is only visible as part of the post you quoted.

I think the Kenwood looks like an escapee from the 70s :) Do like those vu meters, tho...have a couple amps that have vu meters :)

Adcom stuff should be at least equal in quality, if not a bit better than Kenwood. The adcom would give you 3dB more headroom, though. I've had an Adcom GFP555 preamp for ages but didn't buy their matching amp to go with it. Why such old gear?

My GFA555 lasted about 20 years, then one channel failed. How old is that 545, I guess it also depends on how it has been used. If in good condition then the price seems fair.

Take the covers off and look at the insides. I own the GFA 5500 and my cousin is using it to power his system. He paid a good chunk of change to have it rebuilt/upgraded with higher quality parts and he loves it and now I don't have the heart to ask him for it back.

If you can do the servicing yourself it's kind of worth it if you're into that kind of thing because they're not all that complicated. The parts can be a bit spendy collectively with a major overhaul. Anyway, that's what I ask myself when I look at older gear is in the event of a worse case scenario is; "Would I be willing to?" Now that I am kind of obsessed with the DIY aspect of this hobby, I probably would just to have a project with some satisfying returns and I blow money on dumber things for sure.
