Need some assistance with system setup

OK...I am new here, and I am hoping to get some good advice from some of you experts on my system setup. Posted below is my present equipment:

Samsung UN65JS8500 4K television
Samsung UBD-K8500 4K Blu-Ray Player
Pioneer Elite VSX-45 Receiver
Energy Take Classic Home Theater Speaker System (5.1)
Asus Dual Band Wireless AC-1900 Gigabit Router
Arris SURFboard Cable Modem SB6121
Roku 2 Streaming Media Player
Logitech Harmony Elite Universal Remote
Sennheiser RS 170 Wireless Headphone

I originally had it set up by a professional installer. The system has never worked totally right and I could not get the Sennheiser wireless headphones connected. All HDMI cables were run through the AV receiver (TV cable was run into the Samsung One Connect Remote and then into the Pioneer receiver). Doing it this way there was no way I could get the wireless headphones to work (I called tech support several times).

Next I removed all cables from the receiver and plugged them into the One Connect box. Doing it this way, I could finally get the Sennheiser wireless headphones to work (I upgraded to the Sennheiser RS 175 with an optical plug in and ran the connection directly into the One Connect Box), but now I could not get the receiver to work with the system. The sound came from the TV instead of through Take Classic speakers.

So...not sure what to do next. Any suggestions on how to get the whole system to work? I know this is asking alot. The original professionals will not come back unless I purchase more equipment from them (won't be buying from them again), and I have emailed a couple of other professional installers in my area, but they have not responded. My son-in-law is an electrical engineer, but he lives in Boston and I am in Michigan. So I am appealing to you for suggestions. Thanks ahead of time for any advice you can give.

I think you need to simplify things.

First off that One Connect Box, calls itself "Smart" in its literature. Therefore you can take it a read its dumb as a rock. I looked at its details and it made my head spin. Deep six that for a start.

Remember that Samsung produced incendiary devices for peoples pockets. They produce exploding washing machines causing serious personal injury. The fix on recall is not to fix the bearing and drum which is the prime cause but rather increase the thickness of the metal on the top of the machine, to contain the shrapnel. That's a fail and makes for heavier lumps of metal to fly into peoples guts.

So be wary of anything Samsung.

Now connect everything to your receiver. Now make 1 HDMI connection to your TV from the receiver. On the HDMI audio set up menu turn the HDMI audio out to off. That way you will hear the sound from your speakers connected to the receiver and not the TV. After the TV is set up the only button you will need on the TV remote is the on off switch.

As for the headphones, get ones with a cable. Your in the same room and wireless is an complication you would be better off without.

Sorry to say, but it isn't really clear what is happening here.

I can say that you want to use your AVR to bring all of your source devices together. You will also want to use it for the signal to your headphones to. The problem is your AVR has no pre-outs to send a signal to your headphones. It only has a headphone jack, and when that is plugged in, the AVR mutes the speakers.

I don't know about the One Connect box, and I don't want to know anything about the One Connect Box.

I would say try plugging the headphones optical jack into the TV's optical output. If that doesn't work, replace your AVR with one has pre-outs and use those to send a signal to your headphones.

Dave, usually when a new person hits the forum, we try to give uplifting and cheerful advice. TLS Guy has probably setup more new hardware than all the people you've ever met put together and shadyj is no slouch either. You may have noticed, neither thought your One Connect box was worth the time of day. You may have also noticed that connecting your headphones the old fashioned way, with a cord, was also getting some love.

Since you spent money to acquire your gear, this may be a bit disappointing. You don't know me (or them) from adam, but this is a hobby they know, love and have a world of experience setting up. IMHO, I'd take a look at what they suggested and not do anything else or buy anything else until you've given their advice a thorough try.

Most of the time, the people here are pretty cheerful. Perhaps after you take a shot at what they said, you'll be pretty cheerful when you reply back that "hey, it started working!". Maybe. It could happen.:)

I could have quoted your full response since it is kinda sweet :) Dave, he does make a point. I'm not sure what exactly didn't work properly after the professional set it up (except for your headphones), but generally connecting everything to your AVR and then to the TV is the way to go. Using the one connect does not seem advisable.

As for the headphones. I'm not sure how they are connected and what kind of behaviour you expect, but as bucknekked mentioned your speakers will mute when using the headphone out. Which seems no issue to me?

My cousin has a Samsung TV with one of those One Connect boxes. It's a headache to say the least.

Everything TLS Guy wrote is spot-on. Simplify with all HDMI output devices going into the receiver, one HDMI input device (the TV) taking input from the receiver. Headphones plugged into the convenient port on the front of the receiver so volume to the speakers is automatically defeated when you plug in.

Life is happy when life is simple.
