Folks, are there any good or even decent android apps out there for measuring in-room frequency response and applying EQ? Most importantly, below 200 Hz. Perhaps, there are some other/useful audio tools out there?

I am aware most will NOT be too reliable and all. Just curious to see if any of them are at the very least decent. Been looking in Google Play, but most rave about how awesome it is and blah blah blah. Most of it seems like a bunch of BS if you ask me. So if YOU know of an android app that is useful all things audio, then please speak up. Maybe something that is more useful than the REW Room Simulator, no? Thanks!

Cheers,

Phil

I've been curious about how accurate are they and those reviews I don't give any attention...

There are apps but its still dependent on your phone's mic for accuracy. I think I played with one of these once and it wasn't horrible but I forget which one....they kinda all sound alike by name and these goofy unified logos don't do a thing for me https://play.google.com/store/search?q=audio frequency analyzer&c=apps
Chris, that is what I am talking about. Most of the reviews act like that these apps are the best thing since sliced bread! The reviews really don't tell you much of anything. I am not even sure that they are even real. That is why I referred to it in my original post as mostly BS. I don't have a smart phone, but been thinking about getting a new android tablet and use this mic:

Here is the tablet that I am thinking about getting:

The last Lenovo tablet I had was very good. My neighbor has one just like this one and loves it. So, if I can find some useful apps I might get it. Thanks!

Phil

Yeah, the reviews are no doubt mostly BS. Just wished I knew of a few good useful apps that would warrant my purchase of a new android tablet such as the Lenovo I linked above. Perhaps, there are a few, but going through all of these on Google Play is not to appealing to me.

That was a thought a month ago and after thinking about the process and looking at the list of apps, I said to self just go buy one that you know that works.

Might as well give it a try. Lenovo tablets are rather good. I see that the iPads have some very good apps. But, even a mini iPad is expensive. Oh well, it is what it is........LOL!!!!!

If you've got Amazon Prime, you can get AudioTool for free via the Underground. It's got an RTA and a few toys, but I haven't found it very useful for doing sweeps. As far as I'm aware, there's no worthwhile solution for a tablet or smart phone similar to REW.

Thanks for the info. When you say "Underground" what exactly does that mean? I have seen it mentioned here and there, but have no idea what people are referring to. I see that there are better apps for the iPads. But, even a mini iPad is expensive. Guess there really is no substitute for a lap top is there? Might as well look for a refurb and be done w/it.....LOL!!!!! Never hurts to dream does it?

The pro's outweigh the cons, LOL...I believe you'll become creative if you decide to get the iPad and Lenovo is pretty good also...

Will REW run on android now?
Not that I am aware of Chris. Office Depot has a Lenovo tablet on sale for $100. Was looking to see if there are any measurement/equalization apps out there that are useful. Or, at the very least as helpful as the REW Room Simulator. There seems to be a few. But, I have discovered that there are better apps made for the iPads. However, the iPads are also expensive and so are the apps. As such, I might as well just buy a refurb lap top and be done w/it. I see no other alternative for the most part.

Cheers,

Phil

Oh, so this is somewhat an alternative stream to what you've been talking about....thought this was a way to bypass your pc/mic/minidsp plan. I doubt any of these apps approach REW's versatility...can any of them actually implement a calculated eq like REW can with something like a Behringer amp or minidsp? Personally I've yet to find a reason to buy a pad over just using my laptop or phone....

No, none of the apps that I have seen can even come close to do what REW/MiniDSP combo can do. I can easily get around a lap top. My front right speakers is only 7.2' away from my MLP. My desktop is less than 2' further away. So, it is doubtful that I will need a lap top for the time being.

No need to waste money. I do say, however, over time that there will be some more capable apps to come our way. It is then, when I will opt for a new tablet. For now, will just use my desktop.

It's not just the app, it's the hardware, too. I wouldn't rely on a mic in a phone/pad personally. There is an Apple universe specific measurement mic/software that got some good comments but I'm not an applet, can't think of an android based one. I'd just stick to the measurment mic/computer interface with REW to start.

LOL...I like a variety of fruits not just apples.

PS...The audioholics way I strongly believe with confidence would recommend a mic/computer interface with REW.

That is exactly what I plan to do Chris. That is, just use my desktop to take my measurements and setup the miniDSP. Once apps have more capabilities, then I may opt for a tablet then. Might even go w/a iPad for a change. The funny thing is, however, I do not care for larger tablets......LOL!!!! I am a bit odd I guess!

I wouldn't ever trust the mic in a phone/pad for any accuracy. They're made to capture voice and the roll off of the microphones in them will just not allow a good measurements. If I were gonna try something until REW/umik etc, this little thing might work. It's calibrated response is from 18-20k. Probably not perfect but definitely better than a stock mic.
