Hello! I recently got an used Yamaha RX V659 with no remote. Is it necessary to have the remote to perform certain adjustments? I can not even activat Cinema DSP programs. Sound comes out from all channels, but it is stuck at "Stereo" :( . Is it necessary to have all speakers connected to activate that feature? Can a generic remote like this help me, or I have to get the real deal? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Remote-Control-For-Yamaha-AV-Receiver-RAV320-WG646100-RX-V659-RAV321-AU-Stock-/182269707863?hash=item2a701f0657:g:ocoAAOSwFdtXzjCx

By the way, do you recommend getting the optimizer mic? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xyamaha+optimizer+mic.TRS0&_nkw=yamaha+optimizer+mic&_sacat=0

Thanks

Any help in the manual about using front panel controls? My avrs (I don't have your model) generally have enough control on the front panel to do basic things like sound mode, but wouldn't surprise me if quite a few functions are restricted to the remote and a gui on a tv these days.

I'd try and get the original model of remote at least and probably the mic unless you have other setup tools (like an spl meter or measurement mic)....a modern avr isn't really complete without them.

You say you get sound out of all channels but don't have all channels hooked up to speakers? What is your speaker setup at this time?

Well, I didn't see anything about that in the manual. I deducted that maybe my unit is stuck in "stereo" (as it is the word it displays while bluray is playing) and that I might need the remote to put it in "surround" mode so I can select DSP programs, by looking around in the internet, and another model's manual. "
The CINEMA DSP programs are not available in the following
conditions.

• HD audio signals are being played back on a Blu-ray disc.
• Audio signals with sampling frequency of higher than 96 kHz are
being played back.
• When using My Surround function (☞p. 29).
• When playing back in stereo mode"

As to my speaker set up, I just have 4 speakers, two front, and two surround.

Wow, that was quick! thank you for your response.

Did you find the 659's manual or just using the other as an example that it may require the remote?

Insomnia :)

Looked at the manual (well, the pic of the front panel), what happens when you toggle the straight/effect button on the panel? The input mode button?

I found my model's manual, but I see nothing there sadly. When I press that button it just says "Not available".

Which button yields that response? I didn't see a lot of encouragement for the front panel beyond the use of those two buttons....

The straight button yields it. Also, turning the program knob says Not available. I followed all referenced pages in the manual about Cinema DSP but none of them mentions in which conditions it might say that.

I’ve had good luck finding original replacement remotes on ebay. Judging from the picture on Yamaha’s website, the remote you need is model RAV320.

Yeah, I saw there are like 3 available, problem is they don't ship to Mexico :( . I saw one in Amazon, but it is more than 60 bucks... The generic remotes are half that price and shipping is cheap. But I don't know if the generic will give me access to all the options.

Regards!

Hahaha, dumb me, I pasted the wrong link. This is the right one. It is page number 50 as printed in the manual. I tried pasting the paragraph, but it didn't work. http://download.yamaha.com/api/asset/file/?language=en&site=usa.yamaha.com&asset_id=35398
So you're still back to getting out of 2ch stereo mode (assuming that's the stereo mode rather than the all-ch stereo mode?)....seems you need a remote. Another alternative, although it may take a bit of work to get the remote to play nice with all commands, is a Logitech Harmony remote where you can use their database for the 659 to at least get basic controls (and with the IR codes you can do pretty much anything, so a programmable universal remote may work as well).
