Need Help I.D.'ing Single Conductor Speaker Cable?

Hello,

New forum member here. My friend has a new condo that appears to have been pre-wired for surround sound. The family room has cover plates attached to the wall where the front L-C-R speakers and rear R-L speakers would be. Last night we removed a cover plate and found a single cable behind it. I didn't strip it, but it appears to be single conductor. Some of the markings include CL2 ETL and E418436.

The cables exit the wall in a bundle near the baseboard under the elevated TV power receptacle. Are these speaker cables? I've never heard of single conductor ones, but I'm not an AV expert. I also noticed that the cable had been looped and stapled to the stud.

Our next question is whether it's possible to attach recessed speakers in those locations. We're hoping for the kind where the grill lies nearly flush with the wall. Right now there is a metal junction box there with the standard cover plate and two screws. Also, there is insulation in the wall.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It can’t be single conductor if it’s actually speaker wire. It probably just looks like it is if the only speaker cable you’re used to seeing is standard zip cord. If you strip back the jacket I’m sure you’ll find two wires in side, like this:

Thank you, Wayne. The cord in the link looks just like what's in the wall. I'll strip it next time I'm over there to take a look.
