So I have been looking to replace my cheap HT speakers that I have had for quite some time now. At the moment, I dont know the exact model of these speakers as I'm not at home but they are MTX speakers and came with the old style speaker setup that had the amplifier built into the sub-woofer. That sub-woofer went out and I got this receiver:

Along with this Sub:

The gentleman over at crutchfield recommended Polk Audio and in particular the speakers listed in the hyperlink below. I was just curious of what others thought of this opinion and if these were good options. Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

You can't link us to your cart. We can't see what speakers you are talking about.

I will say you should return that Pioneer sub, however.

What is your budget for the speakers? 2 speakers or 5 speakers?

I'm certain that you can do better than Polk for equal $.

Well the Pioneer sub is old and I plan to replace it. There is no returning it however.

As far as the link goes, since you cant see the speakers below are the speakers listed out with the sub that will eventually replace the pioneer.

I plan to part out the system so the budget is over time, but the system he parted out for me is around $1200 without the sub $1500 with. i'm open to suggestions though!

Absolutely skip the Polk subwoofer. Not a great sub at all. The Polk Rti speakers are not bad, but I would skip that tower speaker. If you are going to get a tower speaker from Polk, at least get the RTi three-way speakers like the RTi9 or RTi 12. With the RTi 5 or RTi 8, you might as well just get a bookshelf speaker instead. I would skip the Onkyo reciever. Get something from Denon, Pioneer, Marantz, or Yamaha instead.

For speakers and sub, I would be looking at a package from Hsu Research or a Ascend speakers/Rythmik sub package as well. An EMP Tek Impression package would be good as well.

Thanks for the reply! The Onkyo and current sub have been purchased and cannot be returned. The Onkyo was and upgrade from a Yamaha cheap receiver I bought with the current sub way back. The Yamaha receiver is a RX-v375bl 500w.

I was looking to replace the speakers only with the current Onkyo receiver. If not Polk what brand and what speakers?

Thanks!

What do you guys think of Klipsch? If I didn't say before, I am a boob when it comes to knowing anything about surround sound.

I use Klipsch RF62-IIs in my modest HT system. I paid $600 for the pair shipped; I'm not sure what the latest pricing is like. As someone who is into rather expensive equipment for my music system, I'm constantly amazed at how much my wife and I like the RF62s for movies. I don't use subs, but the bass is very good, at least in my 16x14 HT room. I wouldn't recommend them for large rooms, and we don't listen all that loud, but I'm totally impressed by them on a price-performance basis. I ordered them after hearing a pair once at a dealer, and being impressed, but I honestly thought it was a brain fart, and that I'd be donating them to the Goodwill. None of that Klipsch-is-shrill nonsense either. As with all speakers, listen before you order, or have an awesome return policy ready.

Thanks for the excellent response! I am so overwhelmed by all the different brands. I went to bestbuy today and he priced out a definitive technology system. It sounded well but I think I see where people on here don't prefer them much because of false postings on frequencies or something. I just really wanna save some money but have a nice system. I don't mind spending up to 2k but would like it to be cheaper if possible. I'm going to look into these speakers you spoke of with Klipsch and see how much they are now.

I just edited my post. The room is actually 16x14 with a 9' ceiling.

For $1500-2000 total budget I have a feeling the folks here could set you up with some great recommendations.

Couple questions tho.

What size room is this HT system going in?
Are you open to both bookshelf or floor standing speakers?

Well I'm living in an apartment now but me and my future wife will be moving into a home next year some time so I'm saving the Atmos speakers for then. Right now it's probably a 12x15 room but I want to prepare for a larger living room in a house if that makes sense.

From what I've read and was told floor standing speakers are better than book shelf but correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the second time I have been told about HSU, who are they I've never heard of them? Thanks for the recommendation.

Just did a little googling sounds like they are pretty legit, thanks for the recommendation. I'm assuming the argument for tower vs. bookshelf speakers is mute?

search the forums for "bookshelf vs tower" it has been discussed many times. Pros and cons for each.

With your budget my opinion would be that you would get a better bang for your buck with a bookshelf.

I have bookshelf speakers for mains with a pair of subs in a fairly large room and am very happy with them. the rub with bookshelf vs floor standing is really in comparative cost/performance ratio. you can find very nice floor standing speakers, but the same amount of money can get you higher quality bookshelf speakers as some the costs for extra drivers and a bigger cabinet can be redirected into better drivers and electronics in a bookshelf.

I'm still sticking my toes into the pond myself, but I think as long as you have a good sub(s), floor standers aren't necessary. you can get some better lower bass extension from floor standers, but a sub will almost negate that.
