multizone system receiver/ amp set up and volume control

Hi All, I'm confused about how to drive my multi zone system. First here is what I have working backwards:

Niles ceiling speakers
Niles impedance matching wall volume dials
Rotel rmb-1048 8 channel amp (with input level adjustments)
Marantz SR5006 AVR with zone 2

I'm inexperienced with this type of set up because I've mostly used plug and play type devices. What I don't understand is exactly what is supposed to happen when connecting the receiver with the multizone amp. With the zone 2 out connected to the line in on the amp I got sound but the master volume on the receiver seems to have no effect on the volume coming out of the speakers. The input level adjustments certainly do but these are a real pain since you have to use a screwdriver to make the adjustment.

Am I wrong to think the receiver should have an effect on the volume?

I thought about just maxing the wall volume dials and input level adjustments and then turning down the wall dials but that doesn't make sense to not have a central volume control.

What am I missing?

The master volume on the Marantz has nothing to do with zone two, it's volume control needs to be activated on the remote. Also did you remember that digital sources typically will not play thru zone two, so run analog also

Hey thanks for the reply! What do you mean by and how do I "run analog"?

Ah right. I thought there was a digital to analog converter in this unit so was hoping to get internet radio XM sirius etc to play throughout the house. Maybe I'm wrong about being able to send that through zone 2 outputs.

Figured it out - the receiver has a pre amp out which obeys the master vol.

Yes, which will work and you will be limited to playing what's in the main zone through out the home.
