I have a Sherwood RD-7103R running into a pair of Tannoy Mercury M2, which I've always been very happy with. It's used for music and the TV.

Because of a change of furniture and nagging, this receive doesn't fit - let alone the matching 5 disk changer, so I'm looking for something to replace it with.

It needs to look nice, keep her happy, probably needs to be a narrow unit (TEAC 500 width), have at least one optical in, and less then 120mm in height.

I did buy a Teac 700 set, then found out what they call a power amp is a surround sound amp (rear and centre) which I don't need and the standard stereo seems to lack in the mid range and down - though I'm not looking for heavy bass, just good full range. Oh and the CD/DVD drive is quite noisy!

Seth=L has recommended the Teac 550 (over the 700), this is receiver only (not a problem as I can buy a Teac 500 range CD player) but it has a fan, concerned about the noise and after the 700 seeming to under perform, I'm left worried the 550 would be as bad.

I'm not in the market for new - can't afford, and I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but do want something reasonable.

If you don't have a sub, I'm you don't have to have a receiver.

You can use a nice integrated amp and connect it to the TV via an inline DAC. You could also use a pre amp and power amp. There are excellent vintage options. Quad gear in particular can be neatly mounted and the power amp concealed.

The Quad 34 and matching FM4 tuner are very slim line.

The thought process behind the receiver is it gives tuner and amp in one unit, it also provides a unified remote for both, plus the cd and selecting the TV.

If I had the time and could convince her for home build, I'd go the whole hog and build my own Douglas Self based amp.

- let alone the matching 5 disk changer, so I'm looking for something to replace it with.
Also Tom, the marantz unit I linked to above supports network audio playback - which means if you have your music backed up to a computer in lossless quality (Flac,Alac or wav) no mp3s) - you should be able to play it without needing bunky CD changer or change CD, like ever.
Ininial setup might be a bit nerdy, but you seem to be tech capable gent.

OK, so based upon the suggestions here I have landed myself a Marantz NR1501 off eBay for £100.

I can't afford at the moment to go new or expensive.

I liked the idea of streamed music, but the first one capable of that on eBay was a 1504, and that was £200 without the remove, that was another £20 from China.

You're right, I am technically capable, so the streamed music issue will be resolved with a coupe of Raspberry Pis, one sat somewhere with a large harddrive for storage, the other with no storage plugged into the back of the amp. I'll then use something Kodi, for playing the music off the hard drive. This way I can use one to provide the music for all the rooms of the house.

Don't overlook what Bluesound products can do for you either. There's a great many options, new and used.
