Moving overseas with a McIntosh 240

Hi. I have a unique dilemma. My father is an academic and he's taken on a research assignment in Israel. Rather than do the sensible thing and leave his McIntosh 240 amp and MX110 preamp with me ;) he insists on bring it overseas. So this equipment is built for 105-130 volts as stated on the unit. Voltage of course is 220-240 in Israel. He loves his music and won't part with his hi-fi equipment. I'm wondering if anybody has used step down voltage converters by ACUPWR. They're supposed to be safest and built in USA. I'm a working guitarist and my amplifier tech recommended it. Any advice. BTW, the amps can work at either 50 or 60 Hz.

Those power units will be OK. Total power draw is 345 watts from the two units. I would advise using the 500 watt unit. This will allow a power margin which you will need for warm up etc.

His FM radio will not sound right as Israel uses a 50 msec time constant. America and South Korea use 75 msec.

So his FM listening will lack highs and sound dull.

I do not advise sending the vintage Mac tube equipment to Israel and back. I would say the chance of damage is very high.

All tubes will need to be removed for the journey and individually packed very carefully. Even then I bet at least one does not make the trip.

Also make sure that the tubes are carefully numbered and go back in exactly the same place even if they are tubes of the same type.

After reinstallation the tubes should be rebiased by a competent service tech experienced in tube technology

Wow. I had no idea. Mike, you may want to revisit your original idea w/ your dad.
