Apologies oh wise Samurai !! However, if I'm wrong, I find it VERY odd that vocals in 5ch stereo seem to come out of ONLY my center channel speaker with all speakers level matched? Would that not indicate that it is sending mono information (identical audio from left and right) only to the center?
Is that part of the marrying of your Arcam with B&W speakers?

This topic is making me glad that I do not use a center speaker. I could go 5.1 or 3.1 in the living room, but I choose only to go stereo. Peace and goodwill.

When I run 2.2 or 2.0, most vocals also seem to come out of ONLY my center channel speaker. But that's a good thing. ;)

I got the same issue. I can't tell you how many times guests listening have got up and put their hand on the center speaker to verify it's not playing.

When I listen to HDCD's in 2.1 channel stereo, I can almost SWEAR that my center speaker is running. The vocals seem to be coming directly out of it but that damn thing's not even running !!

One of the big factors is the room and your listening position. My setup is in my living room which opens to the dining room and kitchen. When I'm in the kitchen and playing music at times I like to use 5 channel modes, either a multi channel stereo or matrixed mode because the sound envelops more area this way (without necessarily sounding better). However when sitting in my living room in the prime listening position 2-channel Stereo is superior and sounds most musical.

Also many people will argue about the usefulness of a center channel, the one thing I would say is if you're going to use it don't go cheap on it or you'll regret it when watching movies. When I first upgraded to a 5.1 I assumed it wasn't that important so I bought a cheap entry level center, after watching two movies and listening to the centre struggle to keep up with the rest of the system I brought it back to the store. Now that I have a good quality center movies are a pleasure regardless of where you're sitting in the room.

I agree with Big Dub Sounds. I use the "enhanced stereo" mode on my NAD receiver to light up the two surrounds when I'm playing music but not sitting in the room. That mode doesn't use the center but on occasions I'll use a Dolby PLII Music mode to get it.

When sitting in the MLP listening to music, I revert back to stereo mode for best soundstage imaging.

As for the center speaker, I used a BIC DV62CLRS for about 6 weeks after I got my R500 mains. When I upgraded to the R200C matching center speaker, it was a night & day difference and well worth the expense.
