Denon AVR 1912 input problem

Hi all, new here, so apologies if this has been answered elsewhere.

I have a Denon 1912 AVR for a while now. I have multiple components attached which work fine except, this morning. Every time I want to watch cable -- set to SAT/CBL, the bloody AVR will sitch the input to SAT only rendering no video or audio input. When I turn on other components i.e. PS4 or BD or Chromecast, it works fine. When I manually switch the input to SAT/CBL, for a brief second it looks like it will display but then switch the input back to SAT. This is absolutely frustrating. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This seems weird. Time to do a processor reset. See page 125 in the owners manual. Is it possible that you have accidentally renamed an unused input to Sat? By default it should display SAT/CBL.

Thanks Peng. I reset the processor, ran through the setup wizard. But the problem persists. It switches back to SAT. I am going bonkers here lol.

Do you have another input you can use for your cable box?

The switching IC that contains the flip/flop circuits has failed on that input most likely. It is usually a cap, but the cap involved is most likely inside the IC.

Unfortunately this is not an uncommon problem with these circuits.

You will have to decide whether a 5 year old AVR is worth the cost of service.

You have three options: -

Make do with another input.

Service

Replace.

Your Denon has both a Sat/Cbl and Sat input? Sounds more like HDMI-CEC where you have your tv controlling the input setting (my avrs have had similar with the "tv" input whereas I want it to stay on the cbl/sat input). Do you have hdmi control enabled on the Denon? Try turning it off.

I will respond latest response up.

@loveinthehd -- Yeah, even I thought that the AVR had both (SAT and SAT/CBL) inputs. Bizarre! HDMI Control is switched off.

@ TLS Guy -- I had thought of switching the inputs but wanted to see if there was an explanation/solution, without switching. I did switch the inputs and it works now. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Having said that, I do think I need to replace this AVR, it has been long over due. Any recommendations? I have a Paradigm 9, FL, FR, sub setup (I will probably upgrade at some point). At least 5 components attached. I like Denon 1912, it has multiple options for audio output plus Auddessey/Dynamic EQ. But I am not wedded to it. Mid price range preferred.

Mid price range means what in dollars? Do you need anything but audio concerns? Any interest in the Atmos type speaker positions? How about 4k/HDCP concerns?

That's one reason why I suggested a reset but he said that didn't help. I have a 1912 too and there isn't an input named SAT, really weird.

Good questions @ loveinthehd.

Price range = $500-1,000.

Feature preferences = (a) multiple audio options to choose from i.e. dolby, multi-ch, stereo etc.; (b) wi-fi connectivity (missing this now); (c) music streaming options i.e. spotify, pandora etc.; (d) at least 6 HDMI inputs; (e) 5.1 must, optional 7.1 surround. I am sure there are other features, but I can't think of any more right now.

4k/HDCP = I don't have a 4K TV now but ultimately I will upgrade to one, given it's popularity. So I do have concerns about HDCP 2.2 blocking signals.

Atmos positions = I am not sure what you mean by this. My current setup is similar to the recommended speaker positions but I don't think, that is what you are referring to.

Yup, I agree, totally weird. I wished I had taken a pic/video of this bizarre behavior. I am not going to mess with it now since all is well for now haha :)

If you are happy with the 1912 you will likely be happy with the Marantz SR6010, Demon AVR-X4200W. Those can be considered mid range models.

Oooohh! The Marantz SR6010 and Denon AVR-X4200W look super and fits with what I am looking for. I couldn't find much difference in them other than the maker's proprietary bells and whistles. And I don't mind shelling a few extra moolah. One thing, I should mention re: auddessey on 1912. It was quite a pain in the patooty to get it initially measured and set-up. After the auto calibration, I went in and manually changed some calibrated settings to fit my preferences. Overall, I like it though.

You'll like the XT32 version of Audyssey even more than the MultEQ base version in the 1912. Atmos is the new "immersive" tech utilizing speakers mounted in the ceiling. Even if you get a 4k tv, with a dual output 4k bluray player (which are just now coming out) you can still send audio to a non-compliant avr as well as 4k directly to your display.

Based on your reply @loveinthehd (BTW, I like that username), it seems Denon AVR-X4200W is a better option. I was leaning towards it as well. I thought as much, that were referring to ceiling mounted speakers. I cannot muddle around with the current set up much. Otherwise my wife will send me and the speakers packing right out of the house :D :X I have never had good experience with standalone bluray players. I have a PS4 and a PS3 for that.

Any other options, or should I settle for the Denon AVR-X4200W?
Anything else I am missing, that I should consider?

I think the 4200 will work well if all the features are to your liking. The difference of 15W power is negligible, but having the bit extra won't hurt. I use a 4520 bought on closeout as I don't need 4k/HDCP/Atmos....and works fine with my PS3

Dayyumm, a 4520 - that is power.
Yeah -- 4200 it is then.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions, much appreciated.
