As if I needed another reason to ditch New Jersey, or Nexit.

"Senate and Assembly budget committees approved a tax reform package Thursday that would deliver $870 million in annual tax cuts and a new 12.5 percent tax on gasoline sold in New Jersey.

The action sets up votes on the contentious issue next week in the full Assembly and Senate, where Democrats say they'll need support from Republicans to override a potential veto from Gov. Chris Christie.

With just a week to go before the Transportation Trust Fund expires and a mere month or two before it runs out of money, both panels approved the 23-cent-per gallon gas tax, which would bring the state's gas taxes to 37 cents per gallon, about seventh highest in the nation."

Rick, are you listening?

Don't worry our politicians are just as corrupt. Rick Perry loved to "cut" taxes while raising them. Of course it was always slanted against the lower income folks.

Whenever I see the words New Jersey and Exit, I find myself wondering where the word Turnpike went.

One thing I've learned over the years:
Democrats and Republicans are simply different wings on the same vulture.

Cost of gasoline in NJ is also impacted by the fact that New Jersey people still can't safely handle a fuel pump themselves, isn't it?

Reminds me of one of my trips to Japan. Was riding around w/ a friend and he pulled into a gas station. I hopped out and began pumping the gas for him. Both he and the gas attendant ran to me screaming. It seems you cannot pump your own gas in Japan. They about had a cow. Must've been a big deal to them.

Yup, just like Oregon. The gas tax is probably dumb though. A per-mile use tax for road maintenance is probably a better idea. I'm tired of subsidizing electric cars for rich people.

Actually, that has not been an issue price wise. And, this raise is not for higher return to the gas stations. It's purely for state taxes.

I would think that your NJ prices would drop a bit if every gas station didn't have to employ full-time pump jockeys.

Which other states are so arcane to prohibit self-serve gas stations?

Only Oregon. Full serve is a PITA. Because the gas stations employ a limited number of pump jockeys, each pump gets serviced less often than if the driver is doing it, so lines are longer, and the latency in the gas station much longer.

So NJ and Oregon are the only ones. What do they say is the purpose of the restriction?

I don't know the facts, but I remember reading that the state legislature had something like 15 reasons for disallowing drivers of cars and trucks to pump their own fuel. Most are apparently safety-related, though I know employment is one flag usually flown. The part I like best is that, at least in Oregon, motorcycle riders can pump their own gas. Perhaps the state thinks that anyone silly enough to ride such inherently dangerous vehicles aren't worth any safety considerations. :)
