Dear Audioholics Forum,

Why is it that there are still FM/AM tuners build in receivers, while we have great media features via the internet (Wi Fi / Bluetooth) or CD's, DVD's. In my opinion an FM/AM tuner is not from this time anymore. An integrated amplifier would look far more professional than with that "old fashioned" tuner.
Maybe it is time to let the manufacturers know about this issue, and I do hope on a little bit more space inside the 5, 7, 9 or 11 channel amplifier for useful equipment.

Respectfully.

Nothing wrong with still including radio am/fm reception, some still use it. Bluetooth is for what purpose? What systems do you currently use? DVDs instead of BluRay? Really?

Some people iive in an area where FM stations are plentiful. You don't need an ISP so it's free music. And given the overall cost to add FM, why not? ...just because you don't like the way they look?

Nice troll.

I have a few good college FM radio stations near me.
It's a great way to keep up on new music and local singer / songwriters.

Maybe I have made a mistake with my opinion, because actually I am originally from the Netherlands, and I have been living for over 23 years in North East Thailand. There are to many commercials and a lot of talking at radio stations in both countries. To be honest, I haven't listened to tuners in receivers or separates since the late eighties. I'm very curious from which countries you all are from, so that I get some more insight where technology has stopped, and where it has developed?

I believe the respondents here are from the US.

As for receivers vs separates, if you don't have access to good OTA programming then not having a tuner nmake sense.

But, depending on how much money you want to spend, you get more "bang for your buck" with receivers*. Yes, you can get separate pre/pros and power amps but it'll cost considerably more than getting a receiver. ...and receivers don't suck performance wise either.

Agree. In addition, I'd bet there are very few people who use every feature & capability of their receiver. That doesn't mean a receiver isn't the best buy to get the things you do use.

Also, a receiver is called a 'Receiver' for that very description. It 'receives' radio signals. Without the radio, it becomes an integrated amp.

My radio on my receiver is on all the time here in Montreal!!

So, they do still have radio stations and you simply prefer not to listen to them due to their commercial nature? That makes little sense in terms of where in the world technology has "stopped" LOL.

I like HD Radio; but, in my market there are only a handful of stations delivering it. The receiver I use to get it is in my car. I think I Heart Radio will sink HD Radio. Getting radio from computer or phone seems to be where its going. Soon traditional receivers, stereo preamps and even power amps will vanish for the convenience of computer audio and amplified speakers.

I live in Chicago, there are a TON of HD radio stations and I even have HD Radio built in my Audi Sound System. I still listen to the radio and the Sound Quality of HD radio vs XM is night and day.

Well, thank you very much for some valuable responses from the other side of this world. I am just continuing with my (over the years) HD music library played with computer, media player, and Wi-Fi inside and outside the house with "Chromecast Audio" in North East Thailand where I will survive without any radio stations.
