No output from left channel

So, in my secondary system which consists of a Yamaha HTR 5920, we noticed today when we turned it on there was no output from one of the channels. My GF said it was working last week. So I did some trouble shooting. I switched speaker wires and speakers using the left/right channels to verify both speakers and both wires are working, which they are. But from the left output there is no signal other then noise when I turn up the volume. The right side works fine. This is an old receiver which I bought second hand from Craigslist. It also has spring clips in the back. Does it sound like the receiver is done?

Have you tried a soft reset (unplugging it for a while)? Is there a hard reset available for that model? Otherwise might indeed be done, probably not worth expense of repair compared to replacement.

Have not tried a soft reset. I will try now......thanks. I don't know if there is a hard reset on this model since I don't have the manual. I could probably look it up though.

Hey mtrycrafts, the issue happens with the optical digital input. It is the only input in use with this receiver. It is being fed from the optical out of a samsung TV for Pandora and chromcast for netflix.

In that case you need to try another input source like a CD player.
Also need to try the FM tuner on a stereo station if you have a tuner in it.
And perhaps an stereo analog input.
There could be an issue with the setup from the TV. Or, you could also try an analog out from the TV to the
receiver. Let us know what happens. May not be the channel in the receiver.

Ok, will do. I just moved across the country from PA to AZ. Most of my gear is in a POD making it's way across the country, so I won't be able to try different sources yet. But I can go to best buy and buy an FM antenna to try that source. Thanks mtrycrafts.

You don't need a fancy antenna to get stereo reception if you are close enough to the bigger cities in AZ.

Update! Just came from best buy with a new antenna. Hooked it up and guess what? Both speakers work! So here is the deal with the direct TV connection to TV. The HDMI input on the TV has become loose over time and stopped working. So my GF had to get the signal from the direct tv box to the display via component video connections. Then optical out of the TV to the receiver. So it seems like the problem is there somewhere. Thank you for the help mtrycrafts.

thanks , yeah it's a strange set up but it's only temporary until I can hook up my gear in a couple of weeks. For now the optical out of the direct TV box to the receiver works fine. Then analog out of the box to TV. I just had to experiment and switch some things around. I'm gonna make an audiophile out of girl friend yet! LOL!
