Can't Win - Tuition Cuts

An NC Legislature proposed a bill to cut tuition at 5 universities in the UNC system from $1400-1900 to $500 per semester. Of the 5 universities, 3 are historically black, 1 is historically Native American, and 1 serves the poverty stricken Appalachian area. The lawmaker said the state would contribute up to $70 million per year to cover the lost tuition.

Pretty cool, huh? Not quite free, but a giant step. Even though the Representative making the proposal is a Republican, you would think the Left would applaud this move. Right? Wrong!

The NC NAACP says this is racist move. It would look bad, cheapen a degree from these schools, and is really a backdoor attempt to bankrupt the schools and shut them down.

Whut?!?

So the Representative making the proposal says OK. He'll remove the 3 historically black universities and only propose tuition cuts for the other 2.

I can't blame the NAACP for not trusting them. I wouldn't trust a politician Republican or Democrat. To be fair it is actually racist to single out minority schools like. I wouldn't want them singling out my alma mater for tuition cuts either.

Well, it was only a proposal and remains to be seen whether it would reach enough traction. The NAACP is only pissed because they weren't the ones who raised a stink to spearhead such a proposal. What the universities would like is for students to take loans. This way they can keep adding useless courses and programs that do nothing to advance the future of students by constantly raising tuitions and fees. And really, some of these courses that are specifically designed for athletes are an embarrassment.

For many years that's been the claim directed toward Affirmative Action Programs.

I'm glad I prepaid for my kids college education since they were born. You can wipe your ass with most college degrees that kids are getting these days and sadly they are taking out mortgage length loans to pay them off.

Not only that Gene, but some recent surveys of students have indicated that somewhere around 20% use the money for other purposes like going out and vacations (spring break).

3 are "historically black".
1 is in an area with a high concentration of American Indians.
1 is in Appalachia with a high concentration of poor.

Nearly all students go to one of these schools because they can't afford UNC or NC State, their grades aren't good enough to be accepted, or both. Your perspective astounds me.

So true. In the old days a college degree did pretty much automatically assure a better job. Even if your degree wasn't in the field of your potential job, it was evidence of your commitment, aptitude and perseverance. No matter what your major, you could speak and write properly.

Not any more. I won't start a debate over the reasons why.

I would love a tuition cut personally. As long as the institution is accredited and the course-ware up to spec and will TRANSFER.

I have a 16 year old niece that is considering an English major. She's coming down for a week this summer. Since her mom and dad are both a bit weird and I'm her god parent, well we are going to have a talk, since they seem the unconcerned and emotionally distant parents that they are.

I did. They don't have the full array of large, well state funded, big 10 and Ivy League instituions have but they do feature plenty of Bachelors, Masters, and some PhD level programming.

So you do your 100-400 level classes at $500 a semester and you go to a reciprocal school from that point.

You can't fix stupid. People took the olive branch and beat this poor guy over the head with it. They probably believe $12 power cords also cheapen their audio experience.

My wife got her degree in English almost 40 years ago. When she discovered what that meant, she went back and got another one in Accounting.

The discussion you plan to have is the thing missing for so many kids. How will you make a living with that degree? Good for you, and good luck!!!

No, it's bolstering under served markets. It's socioeconomic and not so much 'race'.

This, to me, is the key sentence: "Many said they didn’t trust assurances from the conservative, GOP-controlled legislature that it would make up for the lost funding with up to $70 million a year." Unless there was already legislation in place to make up the difference in the tuition cost, these universities were smart to balk at the tuition cuts. North Carolina legislature have already proven they can not be trusted.

The pay gap between college graduates and everyone else reached a record high last year, according to the new data, which is based on an analysis of Labor Department statistics by the Economic Policy Institute in Washington. OK... so why not:
> Have zero federal income tax for everyone, not just low income?
> Give food stamps to everyone?
> Give housing assistance to everyone?
etc, etc, etc...

An argument that says govt subsidies should include everyone equally is... well... not well considered.
