Seriously, I have no life.
I saw the new trailer for this move but am having a had time with that Gravity weapon.
How does that make sense to focus gravity and overcome the planet gravity.

Good special affects and what appears to have teh potential of a good soundtrack has me intrigued.

Let's be real here. This is a summer action movie. It doesn't have to be logical, just fun.

...just like the first one.

I didn't say it won't be fun and if they didn't hold back on the sounds, should be great.
Unlike the first, nothing to suspend much, space travel, forcefield to overcome, pilot an alien craft.
This has that head scratcher though.
I could have accepted a particle beam from space but gravity reversal? And localized?
It will still be fun though and will add it to my collection.

Just found two different previews, read a squib about dropping a city on London, suppose that's the gravity weapon? Other sci-fi films have played with gravity similarly. Interesting that somehow Judd Hirsch still looks like he did in the first one in the brief look....and what, Will Smith was too expensive or just didn't need to do it or wasn't invited or? Everyone else seems to be in there....looks like fun in any case.

What always got me in the first one is that they could hack into an alien OS, an alien programming language, and create an executable virus without testing it and having it work exactly as planned the first time. ...and the laughing skull was a kick as well.

As for gravity reversal, isn't that what Ultron tried when he planned to pick up and drop a city on another city?

Come to think of it, most likely. Didn't he try to cut out a section of the ground as well?

No sense worrying about that; it is science fiction after all. What makes less sense for a lot of these flicks is that the aliens are ever intent on coming down to melee with us versus attacking from an appropriate standoff distance. I can understand that for a movie like Predator, but for a race that's really just interested in sterilizing the planet and sapping its resources, not so much. Then again "aliens hit Earth with long range nukes and wipe out a helpless humanity" doesn't make for an entertaining movie.

That too, stand off weapons and still save the resources.
For the Predators it is a game, manly combat.
Nuking would radiate the planet unless the aliens are immune to it.

Depends in part on the weapon in question and where its detonated. The Tsar Bomba test was actually a good example of this, both in terms of being a high altitude airburst and a fairly clean weapon to boot.

To limit fallout, the third stage and possibly the second stage had a lead tamper instead of a uranium-238 fusion tamper (which greatly amplifies the reaction by fissioning uranium atoms with fast neutrons from the fusion reaction). This eliminated fast fission by the fusion-stage neutrons, so that approximately 97% of the total energy resulted from fusion alone (as such, it was one of the "cleanest" nuclear bombs ever created, generating a very low amount of fallout relative to its yield). There was a strong incentive for this modification since most of the fallout from a test of the bomb would have ended up on populated Soviet territory.
The aliens have their suits for personal defense, which presumably would provide a modicum of protection against radiation. Of course, if it is an issue, they could use their gravity weapon to lob a few asteroids our way and call it good.

Now, that would be more like it but they would only have to change direction of those asteroids or could place a rocket booster on them or both to really accelerate them for another dinosaur event. ;)

You will know the answer when you watch it in the cinema.
Can't wait for this, definitely one of the best movies for this year. :)

What made the last Independence Day such a hit was the comedic relief mixed in with the special effects. I don't see this in this film, at least not according to the trailers.

I agree totally. This movies longevity and popularity doesn't rest on the fine acting abilities of it's stars or the inspired writing. It's basically a comic book and if they try to make this sequel anything but that, I don't think it'll go over too well.[/QUOTE]

What the heck. I think I had a copy of the old one on VHS and my kids watched it a bunch of times. Big FX but hopefully no superheroes. The virtue of the original was the whole everyman approach to saving the world.
