Folks, a good friend brought me some Gator Tail to try. It was deep fried. This is the first time that I ever ate Gator. That being said, all I can say is it is absolutely delicious! Never knew it was so expensive!

To me, it tastes just like Chic-Fil-A Chicken nuggets! That is the best way that I can describe it. Basically, a very rich chicken nugget. Just curious if anyone here has eaten Gator? If so, do you agree that is tastes like chicken nuggets......LOL????? :D:D:D:D

Cheers,

Phil

Never thought that I would eat something like gator. Come to find out, I am glad that I did. Just never knew it was so expensive. YOU can get a 5 oz. of gator tail dinner for like $16. That is not very much gator tail if you ask me.

A friend of mine also told me he had some grizzly bear. I am like what?:eek::eek::eek: It was in a can like vegetables. There is no way that I will ever try that. Yuck! He says he has tried coon too? Anyone here ever eat some weird delicacies? As for me, I have to draw the line somewhere. :D:D:D:D

Cheers,

Phil

Never had it and probably never will unless it's somehow sneaked past me. Maybe you can explain but if it tastes like chicken (maybe you can comment on the texture) but comes at a premium price, what's the incentive? My late grandmother (we lived on a farm) would gladly skin and eat woodchucks that my father shot or snakes.

Yeah, like chicken but not as dry and a richer flavor!

In good old Louisiana, gator is common, even gator on a stick is available at many festivals.

The oddest thing that I ate was a Century Egg! I gained a lot of respect from my Asian friends for that one, but I would not do that again!

I've had gator and a few kinds of snake and found them all to be tasty when prepared right. Have eaten all the commonly hunted animals (dear, elk, caribou, bear) and big birds (emu, ostrich). No one really bats an eye for that stuff where I live. You want to see them run; offer some haggis from the homeland.

Actually, it really does taste like chicken nuggets. I would have never known it was gator unless I was told. That is how close to gator tastes to chicken nuggets. Kind of a richer flavor though. Liked it so much, may have to get some more in the near future. Reminds me so much of Chic-Fil-A chicken nuggets.

Cheers,

Phil

Century Egg? That does NOT even sound good. Almost afraid to ask......LOL!!!!!!:oops::oops::oops: It sure tasted much better than I thought it would though. Never knew it was so expensive. Might need to become a gator hunter........yeah right......LOL!!!!! :D:D:D:D

I am with you. But, bear? Really? Was it grizzly? There is absolutely no way that I would eat bear. Dear, elk, caribou would all be endangered around my parts. Can get into eating that kind of game. Many people here love the Rocky Mountain Oysters!!!! YOU probably don't want to know what that is....LOL!!!!

I've had gator before but I wasn't a fan. It tasted a bit like shark -- fishy and rubbery. Maybe the gator I had was overcooked? I'm not eager to try it again, anyway.

Sounds like it was a bit overcooked to me. This was very tender and not very chewy. No more than an actual chicken nugget. Just a richer flavor if you will. Would eat it again if I had the chance.

Oh I know the oysters as well. One good experience and one not so good. I really try to be open to try anything that either locals or a good restaurant puts out. There are some Scandinavian and Japanese items thought that are well beyond my tolerance. Nothing that smells spoiled or is an odd combo like squid ink ice cream. I like squid ink pasta but not in ice cream.

As for bear it is all in the prep. It can be very greasy and it really depends on the bears diet. If it is one of the ones that lives near the dump then no way. A wild one that spends its time eating nuts and berries can be very tasty. Low slow cooking in a stew and keep skimming the fat off the top.

Dam. When is lunch? All this food talk and all I have is a ham sandwich.

Did the legs have a similar taste to the tail? Was it also rich? I would try it if given a chance. Kind of like chicken too?

Cheers,

Yeah, honestly, it was more like BBQ chicken wings :)

It was good!

My old room mate is from Louisiana, so I got a pretty good culinary education, especially the weirder stuff from him.

Rabbit Gumbo--that was one of my favorites!

So you will eat bear. But, if it eats at the dump no way, no? A feller got to eat somewhere right? So, maybe that is all a bear has to eat is at the dump. How do you think that bear feels now that you won't eat him.....LOL??????? :p:p:p:p

Sorry, just found this kind of funny. No worries for me. I am NOT going to eat bear period! One of my neighbors loves crayfish. He sucks their head and guts-YUCK!!!! Makes me want to throw up! But, when it comes time for some Prime Rib. Lookout because I can flat put it away! ;);););)

Cheers,

Phil

What a critter eats can be as important to how it tastes as what the critter is.

Liked Gator. Prefer wild duck over farm duck. Have had deer, bear, wild goose, squirrel (in a stew, it was pissing me off...yelled at me all 3 hours I was sitting in the deer stand so it became dinner).

Rocky Mountain Oysters...been there on accident. Nope, that wasn't fried fish!

I can't stand fried chicken gizzards.

I ate several things while I was in China for work. Not a fan of fried silk worms. The steamed snails were excellent. The purple seafood thingy in the soup...still have no idea what the hell it was but I ate it. Ate a few others I couldn't identify.
