I'm new to this site and don't know much about stereo equipment as you'll read. I'm hoping someone can guide me to a solution for this problem. I bought this receiver at a resale shop and had no way to test it before committing. It played sound but muffled. Took it to a local shop who said it needs an IC LA12659 which is no longer available

My question is this receiver worth fixing assuming I can locate the replacement IC? Thanks in advace

Great receiver! I had one very similar in the late 80's. The answer to your question is yes, it is worth fixing, but this is dependent on 2 things. One...how much will it cost. And, two, what is your expectation and intended use? It will drive a set of bookshelf speakers quite well. However, it won't blow down the doors.

That's good news! I planned on using it as a Hi-Fi with Turntable in a reading room. I expect it will cost about $80 to repair assuming I can locate the IC. Any recommendations who can repair this model and get access to this IC?
Thanks for your help

Welcome.
How much did it cost you?
Did you try to contact Rotel to see if they have parts for it and maybe fixing it?

I gather it will be more likely a background system in that room?
Maybe best to get something new, not expensive that has turntable inputs?

This model has TT inputs and the room is intimate so the set up should go nicely if I get the receiver repaired. I paid $50

Better see if you can get the part and hope it works. then be prepared to pay a tech to put it in and hope there's no other problems with it.

but, as far as recommending a tech, it helps if you tell us where you are. I know a guy in northern New Jersey if that's any help.

IOW, you may be throwing good money after bad. you might want to consider a refurb from here:

This one in particular looks interesting: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktx8020/onkyo-tx-8020-50-watts-2-channel-stereo-receiver/1.html#!specifications
