I have a Yamaha CR 440 and the the lights are on.....shows a signal on FM.......but NO sound? I am wondering if it is worth fixing or does this unit even have potential to sound good? any help to these questions would be appreciated.....thank you! Greg

There is no pre out amp in loop, so that can not be the problem.

It does have a tape monitor loop and you need to make sure that is not activated.

Make sure the record out is switched to off.

Make sure the A/B speaker selector is set to the terminals you have the speakers connected to.

Now connect a CD player to the Aux and see if you hear anything. I bet the unit work. It would be most unlikely both channels have failed.

If you register on the Hi-Fi Engine, you can download a user manual.

Thanks so much for your insight.......I did turn it on and tried Speakers A and B and still no sound....with the connections you referred to....Is there a way to meter the unit to see what might be wrong? I have it open and have cleaned it with Contact cleaner and vacuumed. Thanks ....anyone know what might be my next step??? Thanks Greg

Make absolutely sure you do not have the tape loop activated. That is the commonest mistake from people not from the tape recorder era. That means on your machine the tape out must be set to OFF and the correct input selected.

The next thing to try is you have no sound is to see if you have sound to the headphones. If you can hear the phones but there is no sound to the speakers, the unit is probably non working.

If you are not used to service then you are not likely to be able to repair this unit.

Unfortunately I don't think that is a high end enough unit to warrant repair.

If you do not hear headphone sound, then you probably still have a wrong setting.
