DTS HD and DolbyTrue HD via 5.1

Hey guys. I was a longtime lurker but have encountered a problem with my new receiver and figured I'd go to the experts as customer support has been a joke. I just got a Denon AVR-X200W receiver and was looking forward to uncompressed audio. I run a 5.1 setup as my room is very small. Anyway, the receiver will only allow regular, compressed audio formats. The customer support says I need 7.1 in order to get uncompressed sound. This doesn't seem true according to my research. I'm not looking for Atomos or anything like that, just uncompressed. Any suggestions what to do? Thanks

I also should have noted that I am running bit stream out of my blu-ray player.

You do not need 7.1 for DTS-HD or TrueHD.

Many of us do 5.1 DTS-HD & TrueHD everyday.

Some people probably do 2.1 DTS-HD & TrueHD if they only use 2 front speakers.

I just tested DTS-HD MA 2.0 Channel and it worked perfectly.

Did you play with the audio setup on the BD player? Some BD players have HD Audio formats turned off by default. Some BD discs also have HD Audio Formats as a 2nd Audio Option and regular DTS & DD as the default audio. So you may have to toggle the option to the 2nd audio choice.

I just tested DTS-HD MA 2.0 Channel and it worked perfectly.

I'll reaffirm this. My two setups are 2.2 and 2.0, both play Dolby True HD and DTS MA without issue.

True. I only use HDMI so I automatically assume everyone only uses HDMI.

Thanks for the replies. I am using HDMI. I did select lossless on the bluray disc. However, the receiver still won't give me the option of a lossless codec. I have an extra speaker and am going to experiment with 6.1 to see if it changes the situation.

What does the receiver say it is decoding? Dolby ProLogic? If yes, you have a sound processing engaged. On the remote try pressing the 'Direct' button. If you are playing a BD, it should revert to the track's format.

Which BD player are you using?

Sorry, it is the AVRX4200W. Also, I'm using a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 blu ray player. I have used Direct mode. I have tried 'Auto' mode where it selects the natural output. It still doesn't show any of the lossless formats. I have used Direct mode which only shows "Direct" on the display. It is possible this put it in lossless and I couldn't detect it audibly. My ears aren't finely tuned, but I like knowing they are receiving the best signal. LOL Thanks everybody.

Either your BD player or receiver is likely not set up right. I suspect the BD player. I have a couple of those and they are not the easiest to set up.

In order to send the loss less codecs over HDMI in Bit-stream, the BD-video secondary audio must be set to off. This is in the audio set up menu. If this function is set to on, only the lossy outputs will be sent.

If this does not work, it says under trouble shooting your difficulty is a known problem and to reset the unit to default and start again.

When Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD,
and DTS-HD audio are not output in
bitstream, select “Yes” in “Restore Default
Settings” and make proper settings. (

I own a Panasonic 220 BD as well. I remember having issues with DTS-HD MA as well.

But somehow (long ago) I figured it out. It was some settings in the Panasonic BD player.

I think it should still play DTS-HD MA even when the default mode is Direct Mode. But it doesn't hurt to try changing it to Stereo Mode just to see.

Usually they just read scripted responses, no deep understanding of components, especially if they respond to a number of different components; understandable.
In the case of the latter though, there should be higher ups available.

I wonder what is in the menu about this.

What set up mode options have you selected under MANUAL Audyssey set up?

You might try switching to the 7 Channel option (or some of the others), instead of 5 Ch + Zone 2 or whatever it says.

I'm borrowing an X4000 and it is VERY particular with those settings!

Just a few points:

- 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 has nothing to do with whether the Denon will show the codec or not.
- If you output PCM to the Denon, the Panny BDP will be doing the decoding and the Denon will not display the codec, but you know that already.
- Selecting "lossless" (as you mentioned) does not mean it is 5.1 DTS-HDMA or DDTHD, I have some live concert BR disc that outputs in 7.1 lossless PCM.

The X4200W is a very competent unit and I doubt very much you could mess up the setting to the point it wouldn't decode lossless DTS and DD if you selected the BDT220 to output bitstream, so double check the settings in the BDT220, I just you re-read page 26 and 38 (see below).

As TLS said in post#12, BD-video secondary audio must be set to off, have you done that yet?

If nothing fix the problem then you should try resetting both the BD player and the receiver to factory default, that is, perform a microprocessor reset. You can try resetting one first to see if that works.

I changed the secondary audio to "off" and the problems are solved. Strange because I did that before and had issues. I can't explain it but it is showing the DTS HD Master and Dolby HD now. Thanks a million for all your help. You are all the true experts. One last question. Now my receiver is giving me an option of Dolby TruHD or Dolby TruHD + Surround. Is seems the former is in surround. Any ideas on this? I run 5.1.
