I remember when Panasonic, the parent company of Technics, released a statement a few years ago about why they were discontinuing production of this turntable. Bottom line, people did not want it. Folks wanted players from boutique builders. No doubt, consumers saw the Technics product as a hold over from the 1970's; and, the product's molded plastic look apparently lost appeal to those who thought a basic from the likes of Rega and Project was cooler. At any rate, the SL-1200 turntable is IMHO not a four thousand dollar product. I'd even question it being a value at five hundred dollars.

The SL-1200 is a solid TT, built like a tank, parts are available, it is a legend. My SL-1210 absolutely outperforms my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon.

Talk about capitalizing on a trend!

If anyone buys one, I hope they enjoy it. A lot. Every day. For the rest of their life.
Right!

Find a used one on Ebay and find a shop or friend that can work on it. There is no shortage of either of those items.

It really shouldn't need to be serviced, either. My concern about anything with Quartz Locked speed is that the magnetic coating on the underside of the platter would somehow become de-magnetized and render it useless unless a replacement is found. For that reason, anything I buy or recommend will be very simple and not dependent on anything that's highly technical, like the Biotracer tonearm on my table. If it fails, it's a paperweight.

Honestly, I never thought about that, and honestly I never heard of anybody mention that type of problem on the SL1200.

I suppose that I would worry about that if it ever happened, but seems unlikely.

That still doesn't change my stance on the SL1210. I like it for what it is, I never plan to sell it. I can work on it, I have friends that have worked on these for decades and have their own personal stock of parts.

This would NOT be my go to table for 4K. Its not worth that much money.

Agreed!

As much as I love the SL1200, $1K is already pushing it, and new units were going for a bit more than that immediately after original production stopped.

I'm completely unimpressed with the new Technics line!

New SL1200 is over-priced!
New towers are severely over-priced!
New book shelf speakers are decent but had very obvious sibilence when I heard them.
New amp is over-priced, and it is class D with a linear supply. Awkward design decision!

It's a shame, not a good way to revive a brand at all.
