Should I buy new speakers or recycle?

I upgraded my receiver to the Pioneer Elite VSX-90 a few months ago and noticed I have to turn the volume up much louder on the Onkyo SKS-200 surround system now to hear vocals for normal TV and bass for the "boom" effect when watching action movies. I have a pair of Realistic 1220 speakers that are about 20 yrs old collecting dust. I was thinking of using these for my fronts and moving the Onkyo fronts to surround. I also plan to buy 2 subs to replace the current sub. Specs for the Realistic are 15" woofer, 4" Mid, 3" Tweeter, Power Capacity 120 W.

My room is 16 x 20 X 7 with 2 knee walls separating it from the kitchen.

Need advice if I should try this or just buy all new speakers. I don't want to spend more than $1,500.

Ditch the Realistic and Onkyo and spend the money on two good front speakers.

1500$ budget is good for speakers. Where are you from so we can see what is available for you? I believe stereo speakers would be enough to start with?

Any suggestions for Bookshelves in my price range? The $1,500 will include purchasing 2 subs, as well.

Where in NC? I'm near Raleigh, and may be willing to part w/ a couple Aperion Verus Grand Towers for a very reasonable price. They would be kind of expensive to ship, but if you're close enough we might be able to work it out.
