Process Master Audio or Dolby True HD at the blueray vs the processor

Hi,

I own a Rotel 1069 pre-processor that does not support Master Audio or Dolby True HD.
So can I hook up the Rotel 1069 to a Bluray player such as the Denon 2012 UD that processes these formats to then pass through to the power Amp.

How does the pass through work ? That is, will it work over HDMI or only the 7.1 Analog out form the BluRay
What is the difference between using HDMI vs 7.1 Analog ?

Would it be better to use my Panasonic BD60 Bluray player that can pass through Marster Audio and Dolby True HD as a bitstream to a processor that can process Master Audio and Dolby True HD or to get the Denon and use it in the above configuration.

The cost of getting the Denon being the cheaper option to get a processor that would do handle HD audio formats.

Thanks

If you're running an external amplifier, then there's really no difference between going directly from the BD player's preouts (Denon 2012) vs a processor's preouts in terms of processing the source signal and sending it to the appropriate speaker channel. What you lose by doing this is all the other stuff that the updated processor brings to the table. Automated room calibration, possibly better level matching and some other odds and ends.

If you don't already own the Denon 2012, I'd skip it and go for a new receiver with pre-outs instead of the discontinued Denon.

Thanks for the quick response.
Yes your suggestion makes sense and for one more reason.
As the content is online through NetFlix, Apple TV, Hulu etc.
I suppose the receiver needs the capability to process the formats.
Not sure if these online sources provide lossless audio for the movies, TV shows etc.

That's one of the downsides (currently) to streaming, no consistency or 'standards' for audio.

And if you don't already own the Denon, but see the value in a quality disc player, check out the Oppo BDP-103 or it's 103D - Darbee variant with further upgraded video processing. I have the older BDP-93, but I must say the value is in the video play back! Tried on every TV I own, and it's a 'night and day' difference with the Oppo. Well worth the price of admission!

Thanks. Yes heard great things on the Oppo BDP 103/103D
Do they support multi region BluRay and DVD ?
I suppose 4K players are coming out soon.
Though that will take time for content.

Processing from Digital to Analog at the player or at the amp is easy when the player has analog outs which makes the decision possible. Then just choose the unit with the codex you want. I like the Oppo since it has analog output. My Panasonic BD 80 also has analog out, so, I let it process. Of course, for me, this works out since I'm satisfied with 5.1 which is what I've got with my Sony TA-P9000ES preamp which BTW has no digital processing what so ever.

Yes it is universal, also playing SACD.

4K is pretty meaningless unless you've got 80+ inches of screen size. What we need are better displays with better black levels like plasma had. OLED seems to solving that, and the price keeps dropping as it gets adopted!
