I am buying a new AVR in the next week or so. Is it a must to have the HDCP 2.2 HDMI?
I see really good deals on non 2.2 compliant AVR's... Thanks

If you want 4K yes, if you don't then no. Personally I could not give a tinkers about 4K. Those screens look worse than the one I have.

Did you have to replace your Panny Plasma?

Actually just blue ray is all I care about. Just don't want to buy a disc down the road and not be able to play it. As for the plasma. I moved my other Panasonic plasma into my main room. However it's on a 50 in version but it has a better pic than my older 54 that went bad. I purchased a Vizio 4K M series for the bed room. In all honesty it's very good once I fixed all the settings. I'm happy with it. However I regret not buying a few Panasonic plasmas for back up.

So to be clear what does the 2.2 version HDMI get you. Just 4K content? Not sure I completely understand it.

HDMI 2.0 gets you 4K compliance, 2.0a adds HDR capability and the HDCP 2.2 protocol is for copy protection on 4K content.

I have a new Samsung SUHD display and the 4K HDR stuff streamed from Amazon on the TV app is just amazing. It's definitely the future of home video, IMO.

That said, there's not a lot of 4K or 4K/HDR content out there now, there are some 4K players and discs coming next year and, of course we have the inevitable format war between Dolby Vision and the SMPTE standard.

For the time being you might as well pick up a good deal on a non-2.0/2.2 receiver and enjoy it for a couple of years while you wait for the dust to settle.

Best,
Bill

Im in the same boat as you. I've decided to go ahead and get a good deal on a non-compliant AVR. Of course, some people dont have to worry about the issue because their console or streaming device has more than just one HDMI out, therefore, they can run one HDMI to the AVR for the audio, and another HDMI to the TV, bypassing the AVR for their 4k video content. However, I use a PS3 and PS4 for all of my video content, and each of those only have one HDMI out.

I dont even have a 4k TV yet, but I might in the near future. I figure if I find myself with a 4k TV and a non-compliant AVR, I might look into something like this to solve my one HDMI out problem:

No, even if you want to play 4k, you should be able get a hdcp 2.2 player that offers 2 HDMI outputs so for 4k content you can just bypass the avr.

That's a great price but knowing this guy, he will end up with a Marantz. IIRC, he is in the camp that believe in certain makes, such as Marantz, that represents the "warm" sound that he prefers.:D That's why he's not asking for AVR recommendations, he is only asking about whether HDCP2.2 is a must.
