Also, anyone know the dif between the two def tech center speakers? CS-8040 or CLR2002BLA? the speech of the actor is critical to me (hard of hearing of speech and wear 2 hearing aids). Thanks

All I can say about HDMI is watch out for cables that are too stiff.
For RCA cables, the composite video cables are becoming obsolete so you can get nice ones for a song!
Here is a 12' sub cable and a 12' stereo RCA cable for $3.88 (they pull apart easily):

This is a great package deal at $5.88 for HDMI, TosLink, & RCA. At that price, be liberal and buy enough (3-5) to be sure you are covered:

The above will probably get you enough cables

For your 10X18 room that SVS sub is a good choice, definitely better than the Klipsch.

Def tech....3 1/2 surround (SR-8040), 4 1/2 center (CS-8040), and bookshelf 5 /14 (sm45)

Just need advice is this all works well together, or are there any other suggestions for a center channel speaker that provides better vocals? The pro 1000? there is a yamaha that is often cited. Suggestions before I purchase this week, please. Also, the family room opens on one end to hallway, kitchen. Couch will be facing away from that opening, so placing surrounds just behind the couch???
thanks

That will all work together and be fine. When you set speaker volume levels you can always boost the center a little louder if you need to compensate. No problem.

It's usually considered best to have the center speaker matching the front left and right speakers, so those look fine.

I have a pair of the SB-12s and love them. You made a good choice.

Don't think he's tried that. Think it'd make a nice gift (I mean besides the music..something personal?

Check which labels he has in his bar, and that would tell where his tastes lie and be a good indicator of something new he'd likely enjoy. I'd long been tasting single malt scotch of varying types when one of my coworkers put a glass of Woodford Reserve Bourbon in front of me. While quite a bit sweeter than nearly any scotch, I found it very pleasurable and far more "drinkable" than many of the snobbish single malts at 2 to 3 times the price.
