Southern novice in need of advice

Hi to all~
I wanted to surprise my husband with some upgraded audio equipment for Christmas however I really do not understand any of this. I came across this site while researching endlessly for some audiophile god to give me some sound (no pun intended) advice. At this point, you guys might as well be teaching me Chinese algorithms in Russia because I am now thoroughly confused and frustrated. My issues are beginner baby questions and I know that I am out of my league in this forum, however...the more I research, the more I am ready to call off the dogs and give up so....ya'll are my last hope.

These are my issues/parameters:
-I love music and we both enjoy chilling out on the weekends just listening to music and having some drinks after a long week (who can't relate on this forum?). Typically it is through our phone or old CD's.
-My goal is to hear a clearer/cleaner audio sound. Recently he bought an LG sound bar (with a subwoofer?? I honestly have no clue what that is so who knows what I really have).
- Room is our living room with 18' cathedral ceilings and is very open. Our TV is in a built in on the far right, with a fireplace in the middle and additional shelving on the left (not sure if that matters but I assume speaker placement may be an issue)? We will not live in this house forever so I am not interested in getting speakers installed all over.
-I don't really jam on tower speakers because they will just seem awkward and appear like an afterthought given the design of the room.
-Budget max $4k but would like to be all in with TT&L around $3500
-Went to Best Buy Magnolia room and they said I needed a Rotel integrated amp RA-1570 ($1600) and Bowers and Wilkens CM5 or CM6 series bookshelf speakers ($1600-$2000). Huh???

1. I have no clue what they are telling me
2. Are they selling me the best product for my needs or just the best product that they can offer me given their selection?
3. Information/reviews on the Rotel RA-1570 is adequate but I do not get a sense that this is some sort of life changing piece of equipment among the others out there?
3. Do I need to suck it up and get tower speakers instead of bookshelf.
4. As an audiophile, would you all want your spouse giving you this as a gift?
5. Lastly, I really, really don't have a clue so even your answers must be "dumbed down"

Before delving into the questions Id like to ask if you intend for the speakers to go onto the shelve? If so the salesperson wasnt listening well as that speaker has a rear facing port and would not sound optimal on shelve. After confirming we can offer some advice

Let me start by making an assumption. Since you already have a sound bar I will assume that, in addition to listening to music, you also want better sound for your TV watching. You want a home theater. If my assumption is wrong, then let me know. I don't normally recommend specific products so I will provide some overall guidance and leave the specifics up to you.

The center of the system should be an AV receiver rather than an integrated amp. It will provide for surround sound and decode the surround code embedded in the movie software. So the answer to #1 is that you should consider an AV receiver instead of an integrated amplifier. You don't have start with surround sound but at least the capability will be there if you decide to go there.

The answer to #2 is that they are giving you recommendations based on your budget, their product line and the assumption that you don't want to have a home theater in addition to a HiFi system.

The answer to #3 is handled above.

You can have bookshelf speakers if you like, you would simply add a subwoofer to the product list. That would allow your system to produce all the music or other content with full quality. So the answer to the second #3 is no you don't need towers but you need to live with adding an additional box to the room. Personally I recommend subwoofers even for tower speakers. On the plus side, the subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room. You should listen to speakers with music that you like and choose the ones that sound best to you.

#4 Sounds like a great gift to me. It is one you can both enjoy together.

So, if you want to replace the sound bar with something better, choose an AV receiver (They are all perfectly fine), a pair of bookshelf speakers and stands that sound good to you and a subwoofer. That will provide what you asked the salesman to suggest and leave the option of growing into home theater either now or later. And don't forget the cables. Choose the least expensive ones available. Contrary to what the salesman will say, cables have nothing to do with sound.

It may help if you can post some pics of the room and the intended install area for speakers etc.

You may need to go to the "new post pad thread" and get your post count up before you can post pics.

BTW, thanks for coming here. $1600 of your budget for a receiver is a misuse of your budget. You can get a great receiver for half of that and put more money into speakers which will make a bigger impact on your sound quality.
Give us a bit more info and we can set you up with some great options.

Unfortunately, the LG sound bar is likely not useful, but tell us the model so we can be certain about it.

We may be able to help. We will see. :)

-I love music and we both enjoy chilling out on the weekends just listening to music and having some drinks after a long week (who can't relate on this forum?). Typically it is through our phone or old CD's.
Who doesn't? Am I right?

-My goal is to hear a clearer/cleaner audio sound. Recently he bought an LG sound bar (with a subwoofer?? I honestly have no clue what that is so who knows what I really have).
A subwoofer's purpose is to produce deep bass. What that does for movies is gives them punch. Generally it adds to the excitement. For music I tend to look at subwoofers as a way to fill in the rest of the music. Drums sound better, bass guitars sound better, etc etc....

Generally, despite bookshelf speakers being named "Bookshelf" does not necessarily imply the are designed to be placed on a shelf. In fact, most times they sound much better when placed on stands. The picture below is an example of what that would look like. Of course you can always get different style speaker stands that match the decor of your room better and the same goes for speakers. Granted the better looking speakers do tend to be a bit more expensive. If you are set on placing speakers on a shelf I would recommend looking at front ported or sealed enclosure speakers only. Put simply a speaker will typically have an open "hole" somewhere on the speaker. This is usually on the front or back of the speaker. Rear ported speakers will sound more boomy when placed right up against the wall or on a shelf.

-I don't really jam on tower speakers because they will just seem awkward and appear like an afterthought given the design of the room.
That's understandable.

-Budget max $4k but would like to be all in with TT&L around $3500
He's a lucky guy. :D

-Went to Best Buy Magnolia room and they said I needed a Rotel integrated amp RA-1570 ($1600) and Bowers and Wilkens CM5 or CM6 series bookshelf speakers ($1600-$2000). Huh???
That is fine equipment, but I'm willing to bet the recommended them for all the wrong reasons. If you told them your budget then they have carte blanche to recommend whatever they stand to profit most from. If you told them that you wanted to put these on a shelf they made the wrong recommendation as those speakers have a rear facing port.

1. I have no clue what they are telling me
2. Are they selling me the best product for my needs or just the best product that they can offer me given their selection?

Has he expressed interest in anything particular himself? I'm assuming you set out to do a stereo only setup.

LRT, $3500 is a magnificent budget to start. The world is your oyster. You asked for "simple". Fortunately, "simple" is my forte, so let me give this a shot.

The most simple system is stereo. That means 2 channels... a Left and a Right speaker. Fortunately, 99% of music, (whether it comes from a CD or a phone), is in stereo. So with only 2 speakers, you can reproduce most music just as it was produced.

When you start adding channels/speakers, you move into what people commonly call Home Theater or Surround. TV shows, whether from satellite, cable or antenna, and movies on DVDs or Blurays typically have 5 channels. In addition to your Left and Right, they add a Center, a Left Surround and a Right Surround. The Center goes just under or over your TV. the Left Surround goes on the left side of your seating position, the the Right Surround on your right.

In this surround configuration, almost all voices come from the Center channel. It makes sense because you see the person talking on your screen so you want the voice to sound like it's coming from the person. In fact, most of what you see on the screen has its sound coming from the Center. Some of the stuff from the left of your screen will come from your Left, and ditto for the Right.

Sounds that are off the screen, like maybe a car door opening, or a floorboard creaking, or a phone ringing, or a doorbell, will come from your L or R Surround so it sounds like it's happening at your side.

Knowing all this, you can see why your Left/Center/Right speakers are by far the most important. For music, (stereo), you only need Left/Right. For TV/Movies, a Center is also important, and Surrounds are fun.

People have suggested you get an Audio/Video Receiver, (AVR). This is one component that can handle everything you want. It is the central command center. You connect your cable/sat box to the AVR. You connect your DVD/Bluray player to your AVR. You connect your TV to your AVR. You connect your phone to your AVR. And you connect all speakers to your AVR.

When you want to watch or listen to something, you simply tell the AVR which input to use, and which speakers to use. Today's AVRs, though very smart, are pretty simple to operate. Most stuff can be selected with one button.

Now you have a few things to think about.
1. Do you want this system ONLY for music listening, (stereo)?
2. Would you also like to use the system/speakers for TV/Movies?
3. Do you want to start w/ 2 channels but maybe add surround at some future time?

Sorry, but just a little more info might help. You CAN use your system for TV/Movies with only 2 speakers. (And it will likely sound a ton better than your soundbar.) Please forgive me, but I'm gonna move just a bit past "simple" here.

Your AVR knows how many speakers you have, and it ultimately sends ALL sounds in the TV/Movie soundtrack to whatever speakers you have. So if you start with just 2 speakers, (left/right), your AVR knows it. All sound in its Center channel will be split equally between the Left & Right. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It gives you what is called a "phantom" center.

Think of it this way. You can detect the direction of a sound because you have 2 ears. A sound wave coming from the left will hit your left ear a fraction of a second before it hits your right. That timing difference is enough for your brain to tell you where the sound is. If a sound hits both ears at the same time, your brain tells you it's right in front of you.

So think of a Left and Right speaker. Your AVR sends exactly the same signal to both speakers, and the sound from each speaker hits your ears at exactly the same time. Your brain tells you that sound is right in front of you. So TV with only a Left/Right speaker, when properly balanced, still sounds like it's coming from the TV directly in front of you.

Now, all that said, here are my recommendations:
1) Get an AVR. (We can make some real good recommendations.)
2) If your use will be 90% or more music, get 2 speakers. (Again, we can help.)
3) If you'll also do a fair amount of TV/Movies, get 3 speakers. (Add a Center.)
4) If you really like the idea of surround for TV/movies, get 5 speakers.

One more complication. Only VERY expensive speakers can handle low bass. Low bass needs a big speaker to reproduce. So God created Subwoofers. They are a separate speaker designed to ONLY produce low bass. In your price range, one will be necessary to compliment your regular speakers, whether it's for music or TV/movies. It gives you another thing to think about.

When you go to a movie theater, you can physically feel the low bass thump you in the chest in an explosion, thunder, or monster stomp. When you listen to the 1812 Overture, you can physically feel the cannon shots. Is that important to you? How much you want to "feel" will determine how much you'll have to spend on a subwoofer.

Please think about these things. Tell us how you expect to split your time between Music and TV/Movies, how many speakers you want to start with, (2, 3 or 5), and how important low bass is to you. Sorry for the long answer. And by the way, you sound like a very nice wife.

Awesome! I was afraid no one would respond to me given the "pedestrian" nature of my question(s). Thank you all and I apologize for the delay but work seems to have a way of interfering with my personal life!! You guys asked for information....well....well....that is all you need to say....let the talking begin.
So here we go:
Response to Crossdover: Yes, would really prefer bookshelf speakers.
*Image #1 is the great room where we listen to music (now ya'll don't start getting fussy with me for not mounting the TV in the limestone). This is not the main room for TV as we have "game room" that is unlike the great room with a larger TV , with 4 falls so pretty closed off, and regular 12' ceilings. What you cannot see is the couch facing the fireplace. There is no wall behind the couch as it is open to the kitchen. Right side "wall" is a row of three French doors that leads to the patio. Ceilings are vaulted and left side is "open" to a walkway, the entry and dining. All of the shelving you see has a divider wall in between so...that kind of screws me size wise. As I mentioned before, I just can't get into the tower speakers because to me, it is not aesthetically pleasing. If I must break, then I would flank each side of the fireplace or very far left and right.
Response to FMW: Home theater? No clue. The way the game room is set up, that would be better for the "home theater". This room is larger, more open and has a smaller TV so I am guessing I would not gain much from theater "sound" due to the layout??
*No recommendations? That's what I need otherwise I have best buy guy...
*Subwoofers? Not sure what he has working in there, but image 1 shows the soundbar (which we know it needs to go but I guess it came with a separate subwoofer that is placed on the right). Image 3 is the mess under the TV. No clue what all of that is...however this can show what I am working with.
Ditch the recommended "integrated amp? So I guess I read one time that for digital music you need a DAC because speakers and such can come with them in it but they are subpar??? Maybe like wireless speakers.
*Cables? Huh? You know, the best buy guy didn't recommend it but I have three self proclaimed "music" folk and they were totally pushing the expensive cables...good to know.
Resonse to Slipperybidness: Pictures as requested.
*Please "bidness", this stereo stuff is pushing my limits and now you throw out "post pad thread" and "post count up" -- double huh?
Response to KEW: Hopefully I am answering all the questions needed?
*LG Bar? yep I am getting the vibe that it sucks way more than I originally thought, that can move out into game room. Potential problem: I didn't buy the soundbar...would you guys care if you bought something and a chick chunked it? After he was pissed a large TV would fit in there and had to go to game room. So he bought specifically to fit there?
Response to Seth=L:
*Subwoofers? so if I understand correctly, I would need speakers and a kickin' subwoofer.
Black lacquer, rosewood, etc....just isn't me...I like contemporary but I would rather something with a nice brushed chrome that is more tech than "furniture" look manufacturers are going for on the lacquer, etc. I am guessing I will need to be flexible on this otherwise this will turn into a Christmas gift for 2016.
*Lucky guy? Hell yay!
*Interest expressed? None whatsoever so that is why I am kind of nervous about getting this and I was wondering if it is too personal like giving someone cologne or fragrance?? NOW, to his defense, he may never have considered upgrading because he knows I would veto some crazy s#@t going in the room.
Response to herbu
*I am barely holding on with all of this. All I know is that we have satellite - so that means 5 channels. I don't really have a center given that my TV is on the right. Please see above response concerning TV not mounted into the limestone.
*Surround? would like but .... now we are getting into install and we may not live in the house long enough for me to get a good ROI.
*AVR? of recommend away!
*three speakers? Sure, why not
*5 speakers? we are really pushing it because I don't think I want installation?? Do I need to get ya'll pics on all 4 areas of the room so you can see furniture placement?
*Subwoofer? yes please unless I can use the one from the sound bar???
*I don't need walls bouncing because of the bass but I do like the low bass being above average??
*Very Nice wife? not sure about that but in my own little world, I AM the founder and president of the LT fan club
**SIDE NOTE: Not sure why, but people always ask me if LT stands for LaDainian Tomlinson and the answer is no. Even though LT are my initials, I am more app to call myself the original LT after -- Lawrence Taylor...

So to sum it up:
-like hearing tunes while drinking at night on the weekends with the windows open and chilling
-like having people over to drink and enjoy music
-like weekends
-like drinks

I have typed such a long time that I am not going to proofread my essay -- please forgive

OK, it sounds like you are not trying to make this into a Home Theater. Rather you are looking for excellent sound for music and that will, of course, give you quality sound for watching TV with out the frills of 5+ speakers surround. That is a practical route if you love music and will certainly sound better than anything you have likely heard for TV (certainly better than one of the boxed 5 channel packages for $700!)

If the speaker needs to go into your shelf unit, you need to give us the exact dimensions available to fit the speakers into. finding speakers with front ports or sealed speakers will narrow your options. On the positive side of things, if will simplify your decision by reducing your options and there is no emphatic drawback to this restriction.

If it was me, you could drag the sound bar behind your car for the next month if you are replacing it with a truly good system! I could see he might be annoyed if you replaced it with a $300 system (which would kind of suggest he didn't know what he was doing and you fixed his mistake - if he has a big ego, and lots of guys do!). However, since you are splurging with a quantum leap improvement, there is not much competition. He will probably never really know that you are getting not just a $3500 system, but an outstanding $3500 system (because the guys here will do much better than you could expect to find on your own without making it into an obsession - we already are there!). Either way, he doesn't lose face because you aren't insulting his sound bar selection!

Just to give you an idea, with your $3500 budget I would see a rough breakdown along the lines of $700 for AVR, $1600 for a pair of speakers and $1200 for a pair of subs. Since the emphasis is on music and judging by your comments about floorstanding speakers, you probably want sealed subs which are more compact. Ultimately the front ported/sealed speakers will best determine what subs to get.

Nice longhorn! Hook 'em!

Mounting a TV above a fireplace is rarely a good choice, so nobody on here is going to bother you about that.

Now we are starting to get somewhere. As far as "pad post"---all I was saying is that I think you have to get a certain number of posts before you can post links or pics, it helps cut down on spam and ads on the forum, and there is a thread set up just for newbs to get the post count up.

That would be a really, really, REALLY nice system!!!
I would give a little more thought to the subwoofer, just so you know what you're getting into. SVS is a wonderful company and makes wonderful subs. I have one. Subs can be big. I mean BIG. While the SB13-Ultra is not huge, it's not small.

Also, it's powerful. I'm not real sure you need that much power for music listening in that room. Just a wild guess from looking at your picture, I don't think you're gonna have a bunch of head-banging parties. A smaller sub might suit your needs fine.

One good thing about a smaller sub is that you can get TWO! Seriously. Two subs are not for more volume. They are so every listening position in the room gets the same volume. Apologies for "simple", but due to various room geometries and reflections, 1 sub will likely mean the bass sounds louder in some seats, softer in others. 2 subs can fix that.

Back to SVS. They have a very helpful customer service. It's worth a phone conversation to see what they say.
upload_2015-12-3_14-50-26.png

And don't forget sub placement. Whether you get one or two, you're gonna have to put them somewhere. Look at their dimensions online, and see what you think. Due to other furniture, the room, and your preferences, your placement options may be limited. The less able you are to move a single sub around the room to find the "sweet spot", the more likely it is you'll have peaks and nulls in various seating positions. Two is always better than one.

Explore the SVSound.com site. Look under Sealed Box Subwoofers. You may prefer 2 of the SB-1000 or SB-2000 instead of one SB13-Ultra. Talk to them about it.

I'm back -
KEW: I am coming around and I think it may all be coming together in my peanut brain.
*Measurements: I work out of state during the week and go home weekends so we all have to hold up on measurements but I will get back to you.
*Bookshelf speakers: just want to make sure that even though I don't care for the towers in my room, am i compromising sound?
Slipperybidness:
*"Hook 'em"?: Why yes I do!!
Crossedover: Thank you for your suggestions.
*Front firing: No clue, is this a "yes" I need them?
*You guys typically buy this stuff online? What about warranties? yea or nah?
*Since this is a higher end product, I guessing that I don't need to wait for a sale because it will never come.
*Can you turn bookshelf speakers sideways or do they make them more horizontal that vertical?
Herbu:
*Subwoofer size: Will check that out and maybe shoot over some shots on all 4 sides of the room. Since ya'll are advising me on equipment, ya'll might as well advise me on placement.
*Power?: Oh my Herbu, didn't you learn to not judge a book by its cover?
I probably don't need a large sub but I LOVE 60's, 70's, 80's heavy metal. In fact, I will see Alice cooper and Motley in San Diego on the 20th of December.

I guess what I am still confused on is placement. I would natural assume you would want a bookshelf speaker at the level of where you are seated. Given that my TV is on the right, where does that speaker go?
Would the cabinets at the top be too high? and the center one?
Which leads me back to the towers.
Sorry for all the waffling, I tend to be very calculating when it comes to large purchases and I like to look at it from every angle to make sure I do not miss a hole somewhere. I have blown too much money through past mistakes because I didn't work it out multiple ways

You guys are my heroes for all the help!!!

Crossedover: Thank you for your suggestions.
*Front firing: No clue, is this a "yes" I need them?
If a speaker you buy has port (typically used to get more bass out of the speaker) and is going against a wall or in cabinet on a shelve, then yes
*You guys typically buy this stuff online? What about warranties? yea or nah?
For most electronics and speakers the preference is that they need to be authorized dealers, then all warranty is valid
*Since this is a higher end product, I guessing that I don't need to wait for a sale because it will never come.
The speaker I linked if sold in say a Best Buy Magnolia store would retail between $1800-2000. The four total drivers(speaker) in both speakers cost $1044.

*Can you turn bookshelf speakers sideways or do they make them more horizontal that vertical?
There are a couple of speakers that are made that way, but turning most will cause audible issues

Where exactly you intending to place them? Also the subwoofers location. Its is roughly
H 17.4 x W 17.4 x D 18.5 for the subwoofer i linked.

LRT, your area to set this up is going to be challenging! It won't be a "proper" setup as far as I can tell.

Now, we need feedback, where do you plan to put the speakers? At this point, you are planning for just a Front Left and Front Right Speaker and a sub? No plans for a center channel or surrounds?

For TV/Movies, it is desirable to have the TV centered between L/R speakers so that the sound is "anchored" to the TV for dialogue, etc.

Are you thinking about placing the bookshelf speakers up high in those cubby holes? If you do that, then I would try to point the speakers down towards my ears at the listening position. Note: "Bookshelf" speaker is a misnomer, it is better to place them on stands.

Hi
ok, more answers and comments:

1. Speakers - Crossedover recommended the "New Philamonitor" speakers with an added front firing port for $1450
Website does not have any information including price, size, etc however I assume you guys know all the ins and outs before it even comes out. I did email to find out if they are shipping these out as of Dec 7th. Answer to come and then purchase????
*Thoughts on buying a first generation model? Is it like a car and you could end up with issues or is it like a cell phone and it only improves each generation?
** Can I later come back and place these on stands? Are stereo "accessories" made to only work with it's particular brand and model or can you cross brands and have a different maker for the stands?
**the whole placement of speakers in my room sucks. As I understand it from ya'll, my only options are:
A. Top shelf cabinet left and right (but I would need to tilt them down) or
B. Purchasing stands

2. SVSound website is down so I did not have much luck there. Crossedover stated that the subwoofers are 17.4" x 17.4" x 18.5" - I think.....I can work with that??? is it okay for these to sit on the floor?
***Whatcha think??? one sub or two? unless I am missing something, I feel confident I can place these somewhere whether I am working with one or 2.
You guys tell me and then I can leave ya'll alone.

3. am I cool to purchase the Marantz suggested by crossedover??

Thanks again to the audio Gods for helping, advising, and basically walking me through this process

The SVS SB13-Ultra sub is up to $1600 now or $3000 if you buy a pair. At these new prices, I think there are far better options.

I vote for dual subs and dual SVS SB13-Ultras are no longer a bargain!. This is for music and evening out the bass is more important than a slight gain in low frequency output.

I would go with the Denon X4000 for $570 shipped to be able to manage dual subs properly:

and Dual Hsu ULS-15 mk2 (measures 18" in all 3 dimensions) for $1638 shipped:
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/uls-15mk2Dual.html

The Rythmik E15HP which Jman preferred over the Ultra is still only $2316 shipped for a pair and would be excellent if it doesn't stretch the budget too far!

Start at post #102:

What do you think, crossedover?

Dennis Murphy is the man behind these speakers. He does this out of passion as a hobby. The fact that he is not trying to sell speakers to put food on his table or trying to build a business (and that he is brilliant at designing speakers) is what allows you to buy such a fine speaker at such a low price. He had already proven the design concept before he posted the design and he personally measures every speaker before it ships.
