I know next to nothing about installing and/or wiring electronic stuff like, tv's, stereos, intercoms etc. I would like to learn some of the basics to "get up with the times". i am unable to attend a formal class about the topic on a regular basis, so i would appreciate recommendations regarding books, ebooks, online videos etc. that are good for someone like myself. thanks a bunch.

If reading is tedious for you, will make it simple... first take the size of your room and then decide whether you want to invest in 5.1 or 7.1 or 360 degree surround. Once you have done this then check your TV is it LED and HDMI supportive ..if Yes then is the screen size ok for your room if Yes then u can get started. You can pick up any 5.1 package readily available ,now days we get good deals on combos, You can try pioneer ,bose, Onkyo depending on your budget. Once purchased connect your DTH to the AV and connect all speakers to your AV slots ...Do this and come back ...after this there are many things to be known to enjoy your HT. This forum itself is an ocean of knowledge you will learn everything

If he happens have plasma tv for example he is much better staying with it than replacing it with led tv. And here we would never suggest any one to waste their money on 5.1 packages with poor sound quality, it is much better to start up with good stereo pair of speakers than get those poor 5.1 packages. As for companies, bose is one that pretty much no one here suggests as they are highly overpriced for the quality they offer.

360º sound, what is that option?

I would like to know how is atmos more 360 degree than lets say regular 5.1 surround? As atmos only adds height speakers and no speakers in 360 degree around you.

Dwight, you're in luck. The basics of a modern home theater system really are basic. Most all modern HT components today have HDMI connections. This means a single cable connects each component together. The idea is that every component connects to your receiver, and the receiver does all the work.

Have a cable/sat box? Run one HDMI cable from the cable/sat box to the input marked "cable/sat" on your receiver. Same for a Bluray or DVD player. Same for a TV. Then run speaker wires from your AVR to each speaker. The speaker outputs are all labeled on the AVR... like Left, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, Left Rear Surround, etc. If you have a subwoofer, connect to the "sub" output on your receiver.

Easy Peazy. Of course it can get more complicated, but those are the "basics". Everything else you might need to know about HT can be found in Audioholics articles, or this forum.
