Yamaha receiver no 5.1

I am in the process of booking up a Yamaha v-479 receiver. My problem is,
It will not go to Dolby digital 5.1. I've tried everything but the receiver only displays Dolby digital but it's 3.2.0.1. It also is displaying that it's only at 48kz not 96 which I believe is what it should be. I have a xfinity cable box and it is change to surround in preferences. I'm at a loss for why it's not going to true Dolby digital? I'm sure I'm missing something simple. At least I hope.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Not sure what you mean by that. Dolby Digital is 5.1

I'm sorry I should be more clear. The display says Dolby digital but it's not playing ( based on the signal) it reads 3/2/0.1 and the bitstream is 448 and 48khz. Shouldn't it be 96 kHz?

Welcome to the forum! A correction - Dolby Digital is a codex that can be any number of channels, including mono. So, it isn't 5.1 by definition.

VBsafire, as for your issue, are you sure that you are watching channels with 5.1 content? Odds are that you've had at least one 5.1 program playing, but it's worth asking. Just because stations can now play 5.1 doesn't mean that all shows are in it. There are a number of stations in my area that are still stereo, but a number of them can do 5.1, too.

How do you have the cable box connected to the Yamaha? HDMI? Optical?

Still not quite sure I get it. By “it reads 3/2/0.1,” what “it” are you talking about that you are “reading?” If you mean the little boxes on the receiver’s display that show “LCR,” “LR,” “LFE” – if you’re seeing that then you’re getting Dolby Digital. With cable TV, that means the channel you’re watching is coming in as Dolby Digital. But as Adam noted, that has nothing to do with the particular program they’re showing at the moment. You won’t get surround sound unless that program was recorded and produced in surround sound. A lot of shows made and produced for TV (as opposed to films made for distribution in movie theaters) use mostly the center channel only and very little from the other channels.
