Yamaha introduces a slim line AVR

Little disappointing to see they removed the "audio out" feature which I believe meant it could be used as a 2 channel preamplifier.

Edit: Nevermind, no, they are not good for a preamplifier. So there's nothing to miss. Yay!

Why not good as preamp?

Marantz impressed me when they put stereo pre-outs on their slim units. The ability to run separate amps for stereo and only run center and surrounds off of the AVR allow it to be viable for upgrades (if you accept that any slim line receiver will likely be a little weak)

Because the "Audio Out" is a fixed output.
Got any idea what they were thinking? CD-R? Tape Deck?

It would look a little sketchy, but is there a reason not to use the headphone jack as stereo pre-outs using a headphone to RCA adapter?

Usually, yes, there's a reason. Most headphone outputs are not the right impedance or voltage (can't remember which) to be used as a proper preout. Most headphone outputs are downright noisy. It doesn't seem like it when you're using headphones but hook it up to a high gain amplifier and you'll get loads of hiss.

My impression of this is that Yamaha purposely chose not to offer pre-outs because this AVR is meant for applications were space is a premium. There thinking is that owners would most likely NOT buy separate amplifiers for the other channels as this defeats the space premium market they have entered.

I suppose that may be what they were thinking, but then they are ignoring the fact that often it is the in-view space that is at a premium, and there is often plenty of room to locate an amp that can be go anywhere (out of sight, in the closet/basement, etc).

I can't tell you how many times I've given serious consideration to the Marantz slimline avrs as a preamplifier just to have all the features of a home theater receiver, but use it for a 2 channel preamp to feed my 2.1 setup.

At RMAF this year, they had a 5.2 setup (likely not a true .2) with all Pio BS speakers and a slim model Marantz driving it. It was pretty dang impressive, especially for such a cheap and small system.

I must have taken my idiot pill today (totally forget, not sure), Pio BS?

Your considerations are not those of Yamaha's and doesn't reflect Yamaha's intent. Like I said before, space considerations are their primary concern and people who purchased this unit most likely do not have the space for additional amplifiers. It's not a serious omition on their part. They have full sized AVRs with pre-outs for adding external amplifiers.

I'm sorry, I wasn't implying that they should have or that I feel it's lacking overall because it doesn't have it. I was only remarking previously on the confusion of the "audio out" that I had previously mistaken for a preout.

Regardless of appearances I do not believe that I am the center of the audio universe, my desired setup would be odd to others.
