I am a complete noob but I need advice. I want to make a low end system. Currently I have:

An Audio-Technica AT-LP60 player
A Onkyo M-5300 amplifier that someone gave me.. i am so clueless I do not know if this helps me or not.

What I really need to know is what else do i need to buy and whats a decent set of speakers on the low end?

Thanks in advance.

You will need speakers, for low budget I would suggest these: http://philharmonicaudio.com/aa.html

Those are a fine suggestion however that would depend on what the OP's goals are.

Speaker wire from your amplifier to speakers and RCA cables from your player to amplifier.
Unfortunately it's not quite that simple. The Onkyo M-5300 is a power amplifier, not an integrated amplifier or receiver. He's going to need a preamplifier in order to utilize the M-5300 amplifier.

Craig,

The good news is that the AudioTechnica turntable has a built in Phono preamplifier, so you don't need to look for a receiver, integrated amplifier or preamplifier that has a dedicated Phono input. For those who don't know the difference between an amplifier, preamplifier, integrated amplifier, and a receiver I will explain briefly.

Amplifier - straight power, no active level control or input selectivity. Some power amplifiers will have a "level" adjustment but it's not generally to be used for adjusting volume during playback.

Preamplifier - line level used for controlling output level and input selection.

Integrated amplifier - a preamplifier and amplifier in the same chassis, generally more convenient for budgetary and space reasons.

Receiver - a combination of preamplifier, amplifier and AM/FM tuner in one chassis. Generally the most convenient for budget and space reasons, sometimes at the sacrifice of overall quality.

All that said I recommend ditching the M-5300 and getting an entry level STEREO receiver from the likes of Onkyo or Yamaha. Both offer very competitively priced models that have good quality compared to some of the competition. If that's too costly I recommend looking into the used sector for an inexpensive preamplifier to mate with the M-5300 if you aren't interested in parting with it, or finding a used receiver. At the level of quality of the rest of the system I would look for a used Kenwood preamplifier, possibly an Onkyo from the same era as your amplifier (1990s, not expensive stuff on the used market).

Speakers: Outline what your expectations and requirements are for your speakers. Include your room size and budget, and you'll be sure to get all kinds of help.

Should of taken closer look on that amp myself, was thinking it was stereo amp.

It happens. I recently have fallen prey to skimming the threads without getting a detail that would have changed how I answered.

Seth,

Thank you for that detailed explanation. I honestly know little of audio so for the time being I am just kinda exploring this wonderful new world. My intent would be to build something that low cost b/c frankly I do not even know if I am at the point that I could appreciate something very high end. I'm just 1 working stiff trying to support 2x kids and a wife that is taking care of them. On top of this my children are very young and destructive.

Far as use it would be for vinyl. I could maybe conceive of using it for some home theater in the far flung future but for now.. vinyl.

For the room size its just my living room. Rather small.. it might be 12 feet by 20-25 feet.

Overall I'm not looking for mind shattering volume or bass. What I would like is a clear rich sound (of course I reckon this requires money)

Far as the M-5300 I have no real attachment to it. Sure its kinda neat to look at and damn is it heavy. :) Parts wise I've always been the type of person that likes to keep options open. I'm all for used equipment.

So it look like I might need a preamplifier correct?

Could you suggest any speakers and or particular models of preamps?

I apologize in advance for my utter and complete lack of knowledge in this subject.

Far as budget I honestly do not know what even decent used stuff costs. Lets say 250 for the speakers and i have no idea what an ok preamp costs.

2nd question, is that M-5300 garbage or decent?

Based on these specs, its not the best amplifier out there but its also far from the worst. I wish I could see how Onkyo rates it into 4 ohms. How much are you thinking of paying for this?

That pretty much sums up how I feel about the quality of the amplifier, he could do far worse. As too how much he's paying for the amplifier... zilch, it was given to him. All that said I'm not sure if he knows if it works or not so spending money on equipment to get it working may prove fruitless if the amplifier turns out to be a dud.

Young and destructive you say? That makes things a little difficult. Personally I'd recommend some Pioneer SP-FS51 floor standing speakers. They're short, and have a base plate to keep them stable. This way if they fall they won't fall as hard. They also have metal grills that are very difficult to remove, thus protecting the speakers from "destruction". They are well regarded and relatively low cost in the used market. Unfortunately the only pair I see on eBay right now are local pickup in Bakersfield, California. They do pop up regularly on there there. Recommend searching with "Pioneer FS51". They did produce a model after that with a cloth grill that looks nicer and holds on pretty snugly called the SP-FS52 that you might search for as an alternative.

There's a plethora of options, and it may just be better to have a separate amplifier and preamplifier. The reason being is it would be slightly more complicated to operate, meaning it would be more child proof. I'll get more into that later.

For the room size its just my living room. Rather small.. it might be 12 feet by 20-25 feet.
Would be just fine with the Pioneer speakers I suggested. It's not definitive that they would be your best option, but it's the best I can come up with right now that fills your requirements.

I think you'd be surprised what your money can buy these days.

Far as the M-5300 I have no real attachment to it. Sure its kinda neat to look at and damn is it heavy. :) Parts wise I've always been the type of person that likes to keep options open. I'm all for used equipment.
I'm also a big fan of used equipment, I haven't bought any new electronics in years.

So it look like I might need a preamplifier correct?

This is not a plug for me, I would seriously consider taking a wack at this preamplifier here. It appears to be of the same era as your amplifier and with only 10 hours left and no bids it looks like it might slip under the radar and go for chump change.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Onkyo-P-3150V-Preamplifier-/131612114619?hash=item1ea4b17ebb

If you don't nab that one there's a few others on eBay to look at as well. I just did a search from eBay's home page for "Onkyo P" because there's a few models listed under different categories and it's sort of a catch all since Onkyo's preamplifiers generally start with the letter "P" followed by some numbers.

I apologize in advance for my utter and complete lack of knowledge in this subject.
No need to apologize, you came here to ask a question you weren't sure of an answer for, we want to help.

Between the preamp and speakers you could easily come in under that.

In that ebay auction it says no tuner. What does that mean?

The tuner is basically the AM/FM radio. Not sure whether the seller means this preamp lacks a tuner or that it has one but it's broken.

ahhh not an issue for me then. I think I'll try to snag it and report back.

So what features should i look for in a preamp?
The preamp you looked at had no tuner. Just look for something basic like the one I had in the link. There's a lot of options. I can scour eBay tomorrow and give you some options.

If you do not mind that would be helpful. I think I could drop about 100 max on one.

Should any brands be avoided like the plague?

Certainly, but instead of me listing them you are welcome to post what you find here and ask if it's worth your while or not. I'm sure someone or myself will give you direction there.

As time provides today I will try to collect some info and post it back here so you have some options to choose from. I'll also look at some speaker options for you.

Ok. Here's my preamplifier list.

All these preamplifiers are BUY IT NOW which means first come first serve. I'm not listing them in any order, it's just a general overview of what I found that I think could be viable.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kenwood-KC-991-Stereo-Preamplifier-w-built-in-EQ-PHONO-input-pre-amp-KC-991-/272002549647?hash=item3f549d878f

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adcom-GTP-500II-2-Channel-Pre-Amp-Processor-Amplifier-with-remote-control-/171953063182?hash=item280933850e

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Parasound-P-HP-850-Stereo-Preamplifier-Budget-Audiophile-EH-/131576687207?hash=item1ea294ea67

Now, alternatively, if you decide you would just rather have a receiver and you're only interested in stereo I would look into an Onkyo TX-8020.

http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktx8020/onkyo-tx-8020-50-watts-2-channel-stereo-receiver/1.html?gclid=CjwKEAjw1riwBRD61db6xtWTvTESJACoQ04Q7p_Sa7z-xtxnZa_UMNiABTpOopjm5OwMSKmlNOfcJRoCZubw_wcB

If you spring for the TX-8050 from A4L it's 219.99 but offers more power and flexibility by adding digital connectivity as well as preamp outputs to feed a separate amplifier such as your M-5300.

More to come on the speaker front. What did you say your budget for speakers was?

EDIT: Nevermind, found it. $250

Probably going to do about 250 on the speakers but that's down the road.
