Update - Not sure what to think about this issue as I have not been able to duplicate it again. I have used this receiver for hours since then and have played it louder with no issues.

The only other thing I can attribute to the problem that I did not mention was the room was about 80 degrees and one cd case was covering up a small section of the vents on top. About 90% where still open and running cool so I never thought much of it. But I still wonder as intermittent issues are the worst to deal with. As of now I will just continue using the receiver as normal and see if the problem comes back.

Another Update (I know it's been over a year.;)) Not Sure if anybody cares but this amp did act up again and shut down randomly. In the end my lazy ass never took it in for warranty service and picked up a Yamaha A-S500 integrated on sale. I have been happy ever since then.

About a month or so ago I picked up on someone having a similar issue with a Yamaha R-S500 receiver. His issue turned out to be the auto standby function was causing his receiver to shut off. As soon as he turned this function off his receiver never shut off again. I said what the hell and shut off the power management switch in the back and it has worked perfect since then.

So it looks like that function is faulty. Which is fine since I have never used such a feature before this receiver. So in the end it looks like this receiver is gonna be a good runner. Fingers crossed. :) My wife and I are buying a house in the coming months so I am sure it will find a good use. Probably in the garage. Gotta have good sound and music when working in the garage. :D

Thanks for the update. I found this site today while looking for information on several different receivers I am considering. The Yamaha R-S300 is one of them.
