This is an interesting sub

The only problem is that the measurements were taken in room, so it's not readily comparable to data-bass, Ilkka, et al. Still, the results appear quite impressive.

I agree. Would like to see this thing get tested by data-bass.

Interesting subs indeed.. Over my budget how ever.

The submersive is pretty well known for being a very capable subwoofer. I'm also looking forward to a data-bass review one of these days :)

Which eminence drivers is it using? A duplicate could likely be had via DIY...

while they are from eminence, they're not off the shelf drivers. built to his specs. of course you can diy a similar unit using a pair of high quality drivers and a speakerpower amplifier, but I would imagine most Seaton customers don't feel like doing that :)

It is based on the LAB15 platform, I don't know about the modifications to the LAB15 though. I would imagine a heftier VC then the standard LAB15 to to handle all of that power. Perhaps also a mass loaded cone for a lower Fs. There is a buyout deal on LAB15s at parts express at the moment, $200 each. From what I have read, the Submersive is heavily tweaked, so it is probably difficult to duplicate the performance using the same parts. However, for the same cost, you could buy a bunch of LAB15s and amplifiers and build a much higher performing system overall.

FYI, Mark has specifically mentioned that the cone/surround assembly and dustcap are identical, along with the basket. The main hallmark of the system that keeps getting repeated is its overall efficiency. Some things that could help in that regard beyond the relatively large enclosure are a looser suspension and more powerful motor.

I don't know that the stock LAB 15 is anything special, at least not in a sealed box (it's designed for a horn loaded system). You'd probably get better results just sticking with a UXL or Ultimax 18 in a ~4 cf box. A pair of either with a solid amp behind them along with some signal shaping would give a SubM master/slave setup a run for its money.

Good points, Steve you are probably right on with regards to motor and suspension changes.

I was mainly curious to see if he was using an off the shelf eminence driver or a variant. In this case the latter is clear.

I am not looking at this option specifically but it is always great to have good options out there!

Regarding the stock LAB15, it does have relatively low inductance and good upper bass sensitivity, however it would not be my choice for a DIY sub. I was only using it as an example for someone who wanted to duplicate a Submersive. One incredibly high value driver is the Stereo Integrity HT18, it costs $175 and nearly matches the measurements of the UM18.

Mark doesn't really feel there is any advantage to indulge the bench racers, so you may not ever see him submit anything to Josh. Having experienced the SubM more than once, and having spoken to the man several times in person, I do understand why he has taken that stance. It does seemingly run counter to the ID market in general though, were numbers/graphs rule, but it's probably unlikely to change anytime soon.

Thanks for the link to the write up. I have 2 of the previous version (SubM HPs), basically same without the 240v option or slave option...also in espresso (fantastic finish)...they kill in my livingroom HT.
