Need help deciding on a 3.1 system

Hi, I'm looking to get a home theater system, mainly for movies and tv shows. I would prefer bookshelf speakers, since I don't have any space for stands. My budget is 300-400, including everything (speakers, receiver, wires), could maybe go up to 500 if it's worth it

Right now I don't have anything. As far as the room goes, it's for my living room in an apartment, which is kinda connected to the kitchen, so a bunch of open space, but the tv and couch area is not that big. Any suggestion on what I could get? I have no idea what I'm doing when I try looking for a system lol.

I think you are in Soundbar territory. Yamaha and Denon both have decent ones that are a drastic improvement over the TV speakers. You can even pair your phone w/ some via bluetooth for music listening. Denon has one like that for $200.
