soundbar to yamaha receiver

Can I run sound for my living room through a sound bar connected to my yamaha receiver? I have tried optical and hdmi but I'm not getting any sound out of the soundbar. Thoughts?

Sound bars and are receivers are totally different protocols for delivering TV audio. You can’t mix-and match them.

And if you could, what’s the point? A sound bar is like a receiver with built-in speakers. You plug all your source components into the sound bar, just like you would with a receiver. So basically what you’re proposing is to plug a receiver into a receiver… ?? What?
