What to upgrade with casino winnings?

Hi all,

I recently hit about $3000 at the casino and am willing to spend around $1500 on my theater system. I currently have a plethora of random parts but I like the way they sound together and was able to get most of the speakers at good prices. My question is, with the $1500, (give or take $200), what would be the best thing for me to upgrade? I currently have kef q300 mains, b and w 686 s1 surrounds, a Polk psw50 sub, and am using a single nht absolute zero as a center. I'm using a denon avr- s500bt as a receiver. I know it's a weird setup, but I listen to 95% music, so the matching of the speakers in the surround sense isnt too concerning. The setup will be in a relatively small room (think college dorm suite lounge). Things I have thinking about doing are 1) upgrading the receiver, as I find that I lose some clarity at higher volumes 2) upgrading the mains to kef ls50s and moving the 300s to surrounds 3) obviously upgrading the sub to something like an svs or Hsu or 4) moving the 300s to surrounds and adding a couple of q900s as mains. Additional suggestions are very welcome, and in a best case scenario, I would like to upgrade multiple components. My goal however, is to improve the sound as much as possible on that budget. If upgrading one thing is the best way to do that, I would be willing to. Thanks!

If volume is not an issue to your neighbors, sub first, speakers second.

Ls50's and an svs ps-1000, or two q900s?

Not too concerned about volume; am more worried about precision and soundstage.

You should get kef q200 center to match q300 and a sub
I'd recommend something from HSU or Reaction Audio - depends on room total volume
Stop wasting time and money on Polk stuff....

I have not yet heard any KEF products, but those Q900's carry quite a good reputation. If those are my only two options, I'd get the Q900's. You'll still want a sub some day, but I would definitely plan on at least an SVS PB/PC/SB 12 to rival what the Q900's can already put out!

The Polk was a $20 placeholder while I waited for money for a real sub. Think Hsu would be a better value than the svs? Ive decided I'm actually willing to go to $2200 total budget but something like the Hsu ULS 15 mk2 or the SVS ps-2000 would probably be my upper limit for subs.

What if they weren't your only 2 options? ;)

Its money from a casino... assuming you don't owe someone a bunch, why not?

Yes, SVS subs are still considered good, but their comparative value has dropped noticeably.
Since PB2000 is ported subs, you should compare it with another ported sub like this one:
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-3mk5HP.html
which buy will destroy PB2000 in comparison...
That said new sealed ULS sub at least on paper looks very promising

Like I said before - sub choice heavily depends on room volume

Well... I do owe college a bunch of money....... but I assume I'll be able to pay that off without the unexpected casino winnings. It's just nice to have money as opposed to not having money. If the r900s are absurdly good value like I think they are (they are now down to $2,250 and I think I can get them for $2,150) than I'll purchase them and trust that I will be content for a while. I'm just concerned that I might see them for cheaper somewhere else in the future.

Don't forget that your winnings are taxable.
And, if you have debt, maybe that should come first?

Yea I know they're taxable. And I'm mostly joking about the college thing. I have money set aside for that so I virtually don't have any real debt.

In other words, I'm not just some college kid who's like 'wow, money! I'm gonna spend it all now and ignore everything else!"- I'm spending it on speakers because I have all the other stuff planned out and taken care of.

I play at online casinos but haven't won that much. Maybe one day :)Speaking about the purchase, it was a wise idea. Most people can't afford home theatres as they are expensive. Though I don't know what I would do if I were you. I guess I'd paid off my loan.
He probably figured something out about 5 years ago... :)

I think option 1, upgrading the receiver, could bring some improvement to your setup and make it sound even clearer at higher volumes.
