What grinds my gears…

It's late summer, and I've got too little on my mind of any real consequence, so it's time for another session of "What grinds my gears".

Razor blades. I’ve been using Gillette razors for many years since switching from electric to wet shaving in 1971, and I never went back. I like to use the Sensor or Sensor Excel blades. I get that 2 blades are better than 1, and I like the swiveling head and flexible blades. What’s with all the different razor blades now sold by Gillette? I get why the prices have gone up (IMO they went shockingly high), fewer men are shaving. But why is there such a bewildering variety of razor blades? And who really believes that they need 5 blades to shave with ? The other day, I was in the grocery store, and I remembered I needed razor blades. When I looked at the large variety available, there were so many choices that I didn’t know what would or wouldn’t fit my Sensor handle. Gillette had sold good products for many years. Employees had long said it was a good company and kept their jobs for a long time. Apparently, a number of years ago, Procter & Gamble bought Gillette. Now the marketing & sales people who seem to run that company are racing to see if they can run it into the ground.

Kid’s these days… To be more specific, people who are members of the generation that followed my own (baby boomer – born in 1948). Earlier this month, I spent a week at the beach with other members of my family. I had a very good time with my own kids (born in 1983 & 85) and several of their cousins, some of whom had kids of their own. In general, I have no complaints. But I was exposed to some bizarre ideas that at least two members of that younger generation espouse. (I kept my mouth shut while at the beach, but now I can't :D.) Why do they have such bizarre ideas about using plastic items in the kitchen and using microwave ovens in general? OK, I get the hesitation about plastics. There has been a minor issue with the additives used in plastic items to achieve high flexibility. I say “minor” because it was never established that these plasticizers were actually a threat to health or safety. However, it was easy to eliminate their use, and plastics sold today lack them. But this younger generation has taken this further, to the extreme that all plastics are evil. To be specific, I am referring to a nephew who refused to drink coffee if it was made with a filter holder that was plastic. He made an embarrassing spectacle of himself by making his own cup of coffee with a filter holder (ceramic) that he had brought with him.

But wait, there’s more. Microwave ovens are apparently also evil! And it doesn’t matter if you use a container made of glass instead of plastic to heat water in the microwave! Apparently, the microwaves themselves impart a poisonous quality to water. This baffles me completely. I wonder if this flawed thinking is similar to the extremely misguided idea that vaccinations are dangerous and should be avoided. I don’t want to get too deep with this (as I once did about the vaccine deniers), but what’s the deal with shunning microwave ovens o_O?

In regards to razors prices are absolutely ridiculous at the store. Even Costco sells 10 razor heads for $50. $5 a razor?!?! I use Harry's now. Much more economical. The blades are sharp as hell though. I cut the hell out of the back of my head shaving last weekend. That's never happened.

In regards to plastics and microwaves, it sure seems like cancer rates are going through the roof. It used to be that you'd only hear about someone getting Cancer every once in a while. Now when you ask someone about Cancer chances are they've been directly affected by it, (friend or family member). My wife was recently diagnosed with breast Cancer and a few of her co-workers are going through it or have been through it. Maybe the amount of Cancer around me is an aberration or just a coincidence but it seems like something has changed that is causing an increase in Cancer rates. Is it plastic or microwaves? I don't profess to be an expert on microwaves but using radiation to raise the temperature of a cell sounds possibly dangerous to me. Before microwaves were introduced to the public were decades long studies performed to see what the long term effects would be? I don't know but I think we need to take a hard look at things that have changed in the American lifestyle in the last several decades.

I have been using these for maybe 3 years and I am very happy with them. And, 99% of time I have buyers remorse. I'm never happy with anything. I hate everything and I'm generally a miserable human being. But, I love these razors. :)

As an aside, these are the same razors that Dollar Shave Club uses.

Dollar Shave Club you ask? Yeah, these guys.

Re branded Dorcos.

I too use pyrex glass storage containers. Mostly because they double up as conventional oven utensils. The secondary reason is that spices in Indian food badly stain any plastic. Within days they look disgusting, especially, when used in the microwave. The spices seem to create this cruddy looking residue that will not scrape of with a scotch brite. Tried different brands and price points, eventually switched to glass.

I tried Dollar Shave Club. The blades were good but I didn't like the angle on the head of the razor itself. Harry's works much better for me.

If you aren't shaving with a hunting knife, then you need to put your pink tutu back on and go back to Miss Ingrid's Finishing School for Young Ladies!

As for the evils of microwaves, lots of people are scientifically illiterate. Humanity is doomed.

I think this is whole bunch of old ladies stories. Sorry Rich, but physics says that shaking around water molecules does not make water into poison.

I'm glad to know there might be options for razor blades. I'll look into them.

Old wives tales was my first reaction too. But I was surprised by the clearly powerful emotions that accompanied these highly questionable ideas.

Despite the similarity of the words "radiation" and "radioactive", the electromagnetic waves involved with microwave ovens are not at all like the "radiation" from nuclear decay. It's exactly the same as radar waves. And yes, microwave ovens are shielded so no one in the kitchen is exposed to radar waves while using the ovens.

I'll be more serious in responding to you darien. First of all, I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. That is always shocking to hear. Is she getting surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy? I hope for the best, and, with some luck, there may be good reason to be hopeful.

As far as cancer rates getting higher, I would say the opposite is true (see the graph below). If anything, people are talking about it more. In the cases of breast cancer and colorectal cancer, people are most definitely being screened more. And that alone accounts for the apparent increases in these diseases.

The causes of cancers (there are some 80 different types) are usually poorly understood. Probably most may be caused by smoking, gene aberrations, viruses, radiation (real radioactive decay such as from radon), and environmental exposure. No one knows, for example, why stomach cancer incidence has dropped. But we are pretty certain that lung cancer, which started dropping around 1990, was linked to the number of smokers.

Darien, I'm sorry, I missed this when skimming over your post. I wish the best for you and your family!

The #1 cause of cancer is old age. Humans are living longer than ever before.

Microwave ovens are safe, assuming that the shielding is still in place. I promise you that you got a larger dose radiation at the beach that day from the sun than you would get from standing in front of your microwave and eating food from it all day. Microwaves are just a different bandwidth of the same EM spectrum as visible light, UV, etc.

Concerning razors---

Nuff said :D

Thanks for the info Swerd. Like I said I have no scientific evidence to back up my claim. I was just going by my own personal experience that seems like Cancer is rampant all of a sudden. You could very well be right in just that people talking about Cancer more makes it seem more prevalent. But your graph talks about "death rates". What about the number of cases? It could certainly be possible that people are surviving Cancer more because of treatment but I would be interested to know the trends in number of diagnoses.

Luckily my wife only had Stage 1 Cancer. She had the Lumpectomy to remove the tumor and then radiation. Now she's on gene therapy. The doctor recommended Chemotherapy but we decided against that. It's been about a year since her diagnosis so we're keeping our fingers crossed that she stays Cancer free. But her friend that had gone through Ovarian Cancer just had a recurrence.

I wanted my wife to look into CBD's as I have a bit of an aversion to medical doctors in general. In my experience they just seem to want to prescribe prescription drugs and surgery and not look into alternative forms of treatment. Years ago my wife was suffering from hives. She was taking Benadryl daily to deal with it and when she went to the doctor to try and find out what the cause was he told to just keep taking the Benadryl!!!! Are you serious?!?! Just take a drug every day for the rest of my life?!?!? How about you find out what the problem is?!?!?!

Using radiation, something that we know to cause Cancer, to treat Cancer is a bit strange to me. But my wife works at Kaiser and knows some of the doctors she was working with so she felt comfortable with them. In the end it's her body so I let her make the decisions.

Her breast is a little misshapen since the surgery and it is very sensitive. She doesn't even allow me to touch that one anymore. :( And the side of her chest that had the radiation has a permanent tan that the doctors say probably won't ever go away. But now every time she has an ache or a pain she semi-jokingly says, "Oh it must be Cancer."

Thanks for the concern Swerd. I appreciate it.

That's very good news that it was caught early enough before it could spread. Early diagnosis is the single best thing that could happen, and its the main reason why women can survive a very long time after diagnosis. I hope the surgery got it all. In your wife's case, I'd guess the radiation therapy was intended to "mop up" anything the surgery might have missed.

Yes, radiation can cause cancer, and it is widely used to treat it – odd but true. The risk of the radiation therapy is much less than the risk from not treating the cancer. There's a lot they can now do with radiation therapy to lower the risks. Mainly they can aim & focus it so only the area around where the lumpectomy was done is affected. And they carefully monitor the total amount of radiation your wife gets. There is an upper limit to that.

Still, your wife & you are in for several years of "watchful waiting". I hope its boring and uneventful.
…my wife works at Kaiser and knows some of the doctors she was working with so she felt comfortable with them.
I'm glad to hear that. It is actually very important that cancer patients have confidence in their doctors.

I recommend Dorco as well… plus a soap dish/shave soap/soap brush
The soap and brush is probably the best thing I've learned about shaving a heavy beard. After rinsing off the soap, I put on shaving cream and wait for about 2 minutes to let it soak in. Then, and only then, do I get a smooth shave.
If you aren't shaving with a hunting knife, then you need to put your pink tutu back on and go back to Miss Ingrid's Finishing School for Young Ladies!
I tried it without my pink tutu, but it was terrible. Nothing else worked as well to strop my hunting knife.

Yes, cancer is a medical problem only in wealthy countries. In the third world, people don't live long enough to get cancer. They die of starvation, food/water poisoning and preventable infectious diseases.

I forgot the Spishak Mach 20 LOL :D.

Mach3 blades usually come on bulk quantities for good prices on the web. Groupon for example. I use Harry's and the blades on the initial use are frighteningly sharp.

Ceramic and glass instead of plastic? Must be tough for his significant other to get adult vibrating toys.

I can kind of rationalize their view on microwave ovens. I have learned that meat out of a MW is just not right. There is a texture change or something that happens; or maybe it has to do with being heated from the outside (normal oven) vs evenly throughout (MW).
Either way, I prefer to reheat meats in the toaster oven.
However, I have never taken it so far as to consider MW ovens unhealthy.

I am wary of heating leftovers in Styrofoam containers where the styrofoam has melted from the food getting too hot. Should I be concerned? I have no science for this, but surely don't like the smell of the gases released from Styrofoam.

It's only a matter of time before we see the hand-wound, ceramic/glass adult vibrating toy. All natural, no plastic, and no batteries. Consider it the steam punk version of the original vibrator from the Rubber Novelty Products of Los Angeles.

The research is not yet complete to make the connection, but I know it's there:
Picky picky, make that colo-rectal.

I'm eagerly waiting to see the graphic you attached.

Edit: It finally showed up – slow server. It's OK to eat crayons, just don't warm them in the microwave.
