Demon AVR591

So I will get right down to it. I was at my local Pawn America looking for a decent looking modern receiver to replace my aged hand me down Yamaha receiver nearing 20 yrs old. I saw this Denon t that looked very well taken care of for only $120 which compared to its 5 yr age and original Price of $350 sounded pretty awesome. So I bring it home and set it all up and run Audyssey and everything is great for the past two weeks. Now I add a new Polk audio CS2 center channel and STILL we working fine. The other day I go to tweak the channel level dB and I find my Sur. L channel has a slightly muffled output compared to Sur.R. I check to make sure it is not the speaker, I check to make sure it is not my Wireless Sur. kit and both of these check out. Lastly I hook the speaker directly up to the receiver on the Sur.L ports and find it is still muffled. The difference is about 3-4dB between the L & R. surround speakers. I am able to compensate by increasing the dB level of L but would prefer an actual fix. I am wondering if a receiver reset would change anything or not. I have purchased the extended product warranty but am worried that they will exchange this receiver for one of lesser value (that they deem "comparable") or that they will take way too damn long with repair. Does anybody out there know of any steps I can take to test the output wattage of the Sur. L port or if I should not bother. I am not above DIY work but only have a very basic knowledge of circuitry terminology regarding receiver electronics. Should I take it back and take my chances or can someone point me to some steps? If it can be fixed as simply as adjusting the level on that speaker, and there isn’t another problem like it it sounds distorted or something, I wouldn’t worry about it. Especially if it meant “trading down” to something you don’t really want.

Sounds suspiciously like a speaker issue. How did you eliminate the speaker and wireless kit from being the problem?

Definitely try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, use the warranty you purchased .

I eliminated the speaker as the culprit by switching the L and R surround speakers to see if the problem persisted. The switch made no difference and I double checked their connections as well to see if anything was loose. It didn't matter what speaker was connected, they both are muffled on Sur. L Then I tried powering off the wireless kit and was still plagued by the issue, that is why I directly connected the speaker to the receiver in hopes that maybe some interference or amp issue was at play with the wireless kit. As I stated previously though it did not yield any solution. I would think if it were an internal component like a capacitor that had gone bad I would have completely lost sound to the channel but it seems more like a lack of power output. All channels have been rated at 75W per the specs/manual and don't know what component would result in lower W output.

Perfect troubleshooting to isolate the receiver and that channel being the issue.

An out of whack electronic component could be in the pre-amp section or DAC and not necessarily in the amp section. At this point, just finding the root cause would require some electronics know how and related test apparatus.

Is there any pea soup spewing forth from the surround speaker's port..?

Well, I had attempted the reset without any luck. Furthermore I had noticed a weird electronic/digital distortion that would randomly crop up in dialogue audio. I originally thought it must be internet or bandwidth related but it never happened on my Yamaha and there was no drop in speed or buffering so thought it must also be the receiver. I took it back and traded it for the Pioneer VSX521K that they had for the same price. So far I can already tell a difference between the audio quality of this unit and the Denon. This model came out a full year later so it didn't really have it's work cut out for it as all it needed to do was match the Denon in terms of decoding and HDMI options (which it does) but still I notice that the sound, especially dialogue sounds much closer to the real thing. Thanks for your previous help everybody!
