help PC audio setup

Should I get a Receiver or a mini AMP. Thinking of getting the Definitive Tech SM45 bookshelf speakers.

What do you guys suggest that I do?

You can save a lot of desktop real estate by simply getting powered speakers. I’m using a pair of excellent Swans MK200’s along with a Velodyne SPL 10 RGB sub. Lots of other options available from Audio Engine, M-Audio, etc.

supposedly it inherits some of the magic of Harmon top-o-line best in the world speakers - the M2s.

5 or 8 state size of woofer in inches. Larger one has more low end bass, but also bigger box

At first I bought the Yamaha HS7 but didn't sound right when it was setup on the PC. Probably was missing a DAC.

Now I bought the Yamaha RX-V379BL with JBL Loft40 speakers. Liking the sound so far, sounds really better now compared to the Logitech Z653 speakers I had.

If you are getting sound out of your speakers, then you had a DAC somewhere in the chain.

Signal sent to the speakers is analog signal, it has to be. So, something converted it to analog.

Ouch... on the Mobo? Yeah onboard mobo DAC is usually not acceptable. The noise inside the computer is the likely root cause.

Avoiding noisy internal DAC is one of the few reasons to consider an outboard DAC or needing a DAC in the chain.
