Optical audio capability

I have a Parasound Classic amp and pre-amp--with no HDMI connections. So I use optical audio to connect my bluray player to the parasound.

I know that optical audio (TOSLINK) does not transmit DTS-HD-Master audio --the audio format for most Blu Ray discs. Optical audio only transmits DTS.

My question does DTS-HDMA offer significantly better audio? And should I invest in a new amp/preamp with HDMI for DTS-HD MA?

Thats not a good enough reason to upgrade. Seriously. Hold out until something breaks, or a new feature comes along that you cannot live with out.

Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, and already own the best speakers and sub you can possibly afford....

You're still getting the benefit of DTS-MA. It does not matter if you uncompress in player or receiver.

Brain fart. You are correct. In this case, BDP will need to send analog if possible or LPCM on HDMI.

I would not upgrade either if I were you. IHO, the difference between lossy DTS/Dolby and the lossless codecs are very minimal and not worth the upgrade. As long as you are getting HD video to your display, then you are golden.
