Problem with intermittent audio output on surround sound system

Since AT&T did an upload to Uverse, I've been having problems with audio output. If I shutdown and start up the receiver anywhere from 1 to 10 times, I can get it working again. This past weekend I tried swapping out the cabel box, swapping out the hdmi cables and checking the internal speakers on the TV. At first, I had no audio on all of these. Then, I unplugged the receiver, plugged it back in and ran the spreaker calibration. After that, everything worked. Then today, I turned on the TV and there was no audio. I don't know if I need a new reciever, a new cable box, etc. Please help.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Paulette! I wonder if Uverse modified the HDMI software. Can you try a different audio output from the cable box, such as a digital audio output? Also, which receiver do you have?

I have an Onkyo receiver but I don't know the model number off hand. It's 7.1 and has about 8 HDMI inputs on the back.

I tried the straight coaxial output from the box to the TV and that worked but I haven't tried a different digital output yet. I'll give that a try when I get home from work.
Thanks for your help.

It could be the cable boxes. When I switched back to Wide Open West from Comcast, the newer Motorola boxes they gave me caused my AV8802 to drop out sound randomly. I was quite confused by this. Switched it with one of the other older Boxes they gave me and it worked fine.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong, but I doubt it would be HDMI and it could be a hardware issue with your cablebox preventing it from playing nice with your receiver. If other sources, (i.e. blueray etc) work fine then my best suggestion is the box.

Since a new cable box won't cost anything, that's certainly worth a try. Thanks and I'll write back if that doesn't work.

Always try the cheapest route first (as long as it won't damage your equipment) :) Switching cable boxes is a first step and if it doesn't work then you can start to troubleshoot more. The only thing you give up is time
