Lets cut off stupid discussions about speaker and power cables at the post.

Seriously, I have no life.
We seem to be in another bout of daft wire discussions.

On the matter of speaker cables and power cables there is remarkably little that needs to be said on the subject.

I have saved these comments, and I have saved them to be posted on to any further daft posts on these issues.

Please feel free to save these comments and use them as required.

In my view this is ALL that needs to be said on the matter.

[Wire is wire. The function of the speaker cable is to transmit power from the amplifier to the speaker.

The only requirement for the cable is that it have a low enough resistance so the response curve does not start to follow the impedance curve of the loudspeaker. We are not interested in talking about any other aspect of speaker cables.

If you are uncertain as to the wire size required to fulfill the above objective, please state the model and brand of the speakers in question and the length of the cable run. With this information the members will only be too happy to assist you. Apart from cosmetics there is nothing further to be said concerning speaker cables.

Power Cables:

Please do not post making claims that a power cable will change the sound of any component in your system.

All that is required of a power cable is that it be large enough to provide enough current without warming up.

If your cable is room temperature, then you power cable is fine. Any claims that changing the power cable is anything other than a waste of money is plainly daft and without any foundation whatsoever. Please do not argue the point.

In the highly unlikely possibility a power cable heats noticeably in use, then buy a bigger one.]

That is all there is to say on these two issues. As far as I'm concerned these discussions will now be cut off at the pass.

If you want to get the best premium cables let me know and I'll be happy to sell you some with space age material at a wonderful markup. :D

Agreed. Power cables there is no difference. Speaker wire no difference in SQ. I would not recommend the cheapest wire out there. Last wires I bought was some cheap 12 gauge and it was hard to work with. After stripping the wire it was like a mustache, not do many strands for a 12 gauge. Good think I kept Alex's wires around.

Had the same problem with some 12AWG that I bought for a friend's system - it was cheap in bulk but it was really difficult to work with. Higher strand count tends to be more flexible, but sometimes that can mean a little more fragile like when stripping it. Ironically, the single strand wire I tried out, I heard no difference at all with, but it was actually kind of nice to work with. Though stiff, stripping became easier (kind of like romex) and it was easy to connect or use bare.

Did you kiss it? o_O
You got the stiff low strand count stuff from me.
I couldn't wait to get rid of that sh!t. :D
Wrong, I got the good wires from you. Maybe they where sh*t to you, but still a lot better than what I bought. That means mine where real sh*********t.

Like the doc says, it's all good. I've got that wire in use here too. It's 12 gauge with an in wall rating. A sparky gave me a partial spool at work way back.

Selecting power cables requires no more knowledge than wire gauge vs. length, and maximum amperage draw/voltage requirement of the equipment. I (and others) say that what happens on the primary side of the transformer is of relatively little consequence provided standard, ordinary AC engineering is followed. (i.e., not high-end doofus tweako engineering.)

Speaker cables and interconnects are ruled by the Big Four: L, C, R, + noise.

The original poster would be singing a different tune about speaker cables if he'd blown-up a perfectly good amplifier using Polk Cobra Cables. Some amps don't play well with speaker cables having lots of capacitance. Resistance is futile, but capacitance and inductance are also important.

LCR is relatively easy--a scientist or committed hobbyist can model the frequency-response and amplitude change for a signal delivered to the speaker if the amp output impedance, the cable L, C, and R, and speaker input impedance are known. The difficult one is the "...plus noise" part of the spec. Not only do you have to measure the amount of noise, you have to describe the distribution of noise. I think that's where the Golden Ears go all soft in the head and long in the tongue. I suspect that most all of us have bigger problems than the spectral distribution of noise inherent in our interconnects and speaker cables. My room needs more acoustic treatment--about a thousand times more critical than my speaker cables.

What I find "interesting" is that when cable discussion is involved,, it always involves the reported "improvements" in the sound.

While this presupposes a n actual change in what one hears, what is their basis for the perfect sound by which all others should be compared?

Seriously, I have no life.
One of the regulars at the stereo store and after I became tired of his BS, I said I needed to do some paperwork. As he left, he asked if I had Cramolin. I said that I did, but it was at home. He then told me that I should treat the plugs on my power cords because it reduces the background noise and makes the bass tighter. I did my best Scoobie "uuuuugh?" and said "Get out". He thought I meant "Get out of here, you're joking" and then I said "No, I mean leave!".

I'm positive he was an early-adopter of bigger power cords and hospital-grade receptacles.

If we got rid of all these discussions on speakers and speaker cables, where would I go to get a good laugh?:D
