Hi guys, Im looking into converting a old laptop into a media center manly for flac filea to be store in and played from. The laptop has a hdmi output that I can hook up to my pioneer vsx 1021 receiver, that will go then to my pioneer FS52 speakers, the question on this set up do I need a usb DAC or will my receiver be doing all the work for me? I dont plan on using headphones only my speakers, so do I nees a external DAC?

You need a dac like i needed a bridge or an elephant. In other words the dac in your pioneer avr is more than sufficient.

The DAC in the Pios is great, no need for more $ and a more complex system.

You will benefit more from better speakers than adding a DAC (and you are gonna have to spend at least $200 or $300 to best those Pio speakers).

There are only 2 times that an external DAC might be useful.

1) You have an old-school analog only (typically 2 channel) setup and you want to add a computer or something similar.

2) Your computer's on-mobo sound (DAC) is poor or in a noisy environment. Then, you can usually take your choice of a PCIe Sound card or an external DAC.
