Berlin Philharmonic Digital Concert Hall

I've been subscribing to the Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall for a few years now. If you're unsure about classical music and have only heard the cliche pieces like Beethoven 9 and Vivaldi's Four Seasons, I invite you to check it out. They currently have 280 concerts you can stream at any time, however many times you like.

Having gone to a music conservatory, I can safely say that their quality of playing is rarely matched and the recording quality is nothing to sneeze at.

There are many devices that will stream it but I simply use my laptop and a DAC.

Let me know what y'all think! They have many sample videos on Youtube as well.

I have also been a subscriber for a couple of years. The productions are superb and I have posted about this here a number of times. I use my HTPC in my studio. In our Eagan MN town home I use a Sony Media player which has an app for the BPO.

I received the first BPO digital package of the four Schumann symphonies about 10 days ago. This is a stunning production, and the loss less audio is a highly significant improvement, the picture is also a little better.

I also subscribe to Medici TV and Met Player.

This is where the music industry is heading buying directly from the artist. And what an artist the Berlin Phil. WOW.

It is, but that is because the major recording companies have gone AWOL a long time ago. The problem is the very large investment in capital equipment and personnel.

In the US this is a huge barrier. There needs to be networking. The Metropolitan opera efforts make a slim profit, because of the revenue sharing required by the American Federation of Musicians. In the US these efforts have boosted the musicians incomes, but done little to improve the bottom line of their if financially strapped institutions. Because of the cost, networking needs to take place.

The BPO is self governing which helps. Also Herbert Von Karajan got this ball rolling twenty years ago or more.

But now at least they can save money on printing and packing and shipping CD/DVD's and just like Prince they are the sole benefactor.

I am listening to Mahler's 1st right now, for free, very well recorded, and of course VERY well played.
And if this is where the music industry is heading it has my blessing, the Majors has made a mess of it years ago. Serves them right.

Thanks for sharing this. The Metropolitan Opera streams HD performances into the movie theater which I have attended and were pretty good. This looks much more convenient. I just joined http://www.concertvault.com/ which streams recorded concerts from all types of artists.

They Have apps for Apple devices, but not Android. You can however stream via a Google Play App.

Unfortunately the BPO does not have a ChromeCast APP. However the best quality comes from an HTPC running Windows 10 which natively decodes it. I'm just amazed how much better the quality is with Windows 10 versus windows 7 and Flash.

If you are in to high quality classical music stream like I am, an HTPC running Windows 10 is the way to go.
