At Mobile World Congress 2015 this month Dolby said it wants to put Atmos speaker systems onto the face of your smartphone in order to create a more immersive, theatrical experience from the device you carry in your pocket. Dolby has oversold its brand for hyperbolic sensation before. But is it possible to recreate a truly theatrical acoustic experience from the tiny speakers on a smartphone or tablet? Dolby is right about one thing; the sound quality on mobile devices leaves a lot to be desired and even Jack Black made a stand on the subject at this year's Oscars when he performed a number expressing the frustration of taking in movies on your phone.

Another feature to convince gullible people that they just gotta trade in their fully functional one year old phone for the latest greatest feature because, you know, it's new.

Strange that they seem to be stretching and pushing hard.

While I may agree with just about everything you said in this article, I sure wish you would have proof read it.... I am no journalist or English expert for sure but that was kind of sad.

I also hate this concept simply because nothing annoys me more than someone coming into a public place and thinking their movie on their iPad is more important than anything else, anyone else has going on. #turnitdown or #headphonesplz

Dialogue enhancer lol. It won't improve dialogue pans on all channels you need a device to access into the dialogue track itself to raise or lower it to suit the environment. Otherwise it will just raise part of the sound effects and music on centre channel.

Tracks are all stems and we need basic DME access to the Dialogue, Music and Effects stems to raise lower +- db to make it suitable for playback.

Anyone seen the extras on Die Hard two-disc DVD where it had a feature to raise lower the DME.

Need something that is easy to use and programmable so we can type in the film name or the player sends a signal to outboard box connected to AVR though HDMI so the outboard box knows what levels to set the DME for each room playback. I find Inception (2010) to be dreadful. The dialogue is so distant at times and the music is far too high along with sound effects. I'd like top crank down the sound effects/music on Inception so I can least enjoy the film with clearer puncher dialogue.

Dialog enhancer my tuchus! Hell, my old TV had a brightness and sharpness control but the programing was still dim and stupid no matter how I adjusted them.

I wish instead of wasting their time and money on marketing this gimmick, they would invest in improving the current technology- specifically the 5.1 recording and or encoding. I for one won't go past 5 speakers and a sub or 2 in the room, but would love it if the sound tracks are optimized for such set up. as it stands now, most of the 5.1 tracks I listen to leave a lot to be desired; and no it's not for the lack of more speakers, but rather how unrealistic most of it sounds, which in turn makes me switch back to stereo.

I think it is both a marketing ploy and a way to survive. DTS dominates blue ray so Dolby had to change or they would continue to wither. So in that way it is a marketing/survival move.
The other move is they want to "stop the madness" of Dolby PL, PL2, HD, etc. It appears they want two standards going forward, Dolby Surrond (upmix) and Dolby Atmos.
You have to remember the consumer is only half the battle. They gotta pitch the engineer to mix it in Dolby and ideally it would be compatible on all devices. There are too many formats so hopefully going forward this will be the standard across all devices and leave it up to the consumer to decide if they want to listen on their phone or HT.

While the thought of "Atmos speakers" on a portable device is laughable, imagine if they came out with Atmos headphones which would work with "Atmos-compatible" devices. Now THAT could actually be kind of interesting.

That being said, I'm sure all we're going to see is a slew of "Atmos" branded phones, tablets, and laptops. No different than my old budget laptops having quote-unquote "Harman/Kardon," "Altec Lansing," or "Beats Audio" speakers. HA!!!

Phones should be used to phone people and talk to people.I really don't get it, as these days everything is done on a phone and i really cant understand why we need them to do all this garbage. Atmos on a mobile really sounds stupid. It just goes to show the desperation of some companies and whats even worse is the people that push these idiotic ideas for them. Its getting to a stage where people are going to lose reality on knowing just what good audio and video is because of this stupid market for useless ideas. Everything has its place if i want Atmos then i would buy a device which would get me the MOST out of it possible and not a mobile to satisfy a need that is unjustifiable in the first place. It's the old saying "Throw of those chains of reason and your prison will disappear".I really fail to see how this is beneficial. Its amazing how phones have become toys. I use my mobile to run a business and communicate with family.Instead of dazzling us with brilliance they baffle us with bull...t.What a joke

Agree on what the phone should be used for.

Q: "You're new phone talk here listen hear".

Bond: "So that's what I've been doing wrong for all these years?".
