i have a Yamaha RX-V777 receiver. When I first set it up I had on-screen display, but after playing with settings it has vanished. I have tried many different things. Any suggestions on where to start?

Try the “Display” button on the remote.

Go to the owners manual and follow the procedures for a factor reset. After that, write down the steps you did to get you to that point so you can back out of it instead of doing a factory reset and starting over. Also, read up on display setttings. I would set the AVR to auto-select video source on its inputs.

Last time this happened the top of my receiver felt really warm, so I'm thinking is my receiver over heating? But I suppose it should not over heat with these volume levels? Haven't tried how warm the receiver gets when watching a movie, but never had any issues with movies.
