Any of you guys ever hear a scratchy, almost a static like sound when streaming certain songs? Been playing a lot of music the past couple of days using sony unlimited music and I've noticed this in a few songs. Noticed it tonight on youtube as well during a couple of songs.

Even having the volume turned pretty low it can still be heard and it can be heard from any speaker which is playing the content. In other words, if I play stereo through all five speakers, I can hear it in the surrounds as well.

Im assuming its the source, but I've never heard this happen before. Of course, I didn't have Ascend speakers either! JB told me that these were very "honest" speakers. I'd have never heard this scratching sound on my old Kenwoods, assuming of course that its being caused by the source.

Try duplicating the song that scratches with a CD version. I'm suspecting its the source and not your equipment.

That's a good idea. I don't have a very large CD collection so I've only been able to find a few minor samples. So far I've not been able to reproduce the sound playing a CD, so that's a good sign. I wish I had "One Last Breath" by Creed on CD. That's the song I first noticed the scratching sound while streaming it. Its very noticeable during the 15 second intro to the song with only guitar playing. Almost sounds like Im playing an old record.

I get that on occasion when streaming. I believe it to be the source as it doesn't do it all the time. At times I wonder if I'm listening to a vinyl recording as well. I have also been meaning to look into streaming rates and see if it matches up with my BT module in my pre. I suspect it's fine though, so I haven't dwelled on it much.

I do get a loud scratching but only during the gap between two songs and only with music ripped from CD with 3 rd party software and only when played back using my Sony BDP.

Really? That shouldn't happen. What software are you using to rip?

Seems to me that this is quite possibly "running out of bits".

TLS would be the better person to enlighten us on this topic.

It's easy to spend isn't it?:) Not so easy to afford tho. You're not trying to talk yourself into a new receiver are you?o_O:D

Hmm, "running out of bits"? Not sure what that means exactly.

VERY easy to spend JB. LOL. I went from a $200 sub, to a $570 sub, then ultimately to a $888 sub!
I'd love a new receiver JB, but it will have to wait a while. In the meantime I need to begin informing myself on receivers. I wouldn't want to spend over $1000 on one, but other than that I have no idea what I would want or need or what would be good quality. Seems like Denon is a popular brand. In my brief time between here and the AVS forum I think I've seen more people mention that brand than any other. Maybe Im wrong.

I've streamed Pandora via Roku, Sony BDP, and Samsung BDP.
Never had any issues.

Well, I don't know. I do know that its the same songs that do it over and over, be it youtube or sony unlimited music. I'll tell you when I notice it....its usually towards the beginning of a song if its a song that has a higher pitched frequency from a guitar. Example would be "One Last Breath" by Creed in the first 15 to 20 seconds of the song. When the guitar hits the higher note, I hear just a bit of static or a little scratch. Not sure how to explain it. Its almost like a little "tick" sound in conjunction with the sound from the higher note.

Seriously, I have no life.
There are a number of possibilities here. It seems somehow a decoding error has been introduced.

The other thing I would like to know is what the compression codec is.

It seems since this happens in exposed high notes that this is a decoding error due to too low a bit rate. These artifacts in this situation are common. When this occurs on high notes it is known as "twinking".

You should really hear it on the high trebles of the UKs cathedral choirs. Even at 180 Kbs it is often severe. It even happens occasionally at 320 Kbs. It needs at least 640 Kbs to be free of it.

In Pengs case where the issue is between songs, the copying program has upset the zero crossings on the edit between songs. You get noise if you don't do edits perfectly on the zero crossing. My WaveLab has a button to "snap to the zero crossing," when editing.

The most likely reason the editing program has caused the problem is that it has introduced an offset when copying the wav. file.

Really? That shouldn't happen. What software are you using to rip?
It is software related but it is also specific to the Sony BDPs. It happens when I ripped using AVS4YOU but fine if I used other software such as dBpoweramp and iTune. It is also Sony BDPs related because songs ripped by AVS4YOU works fine with my Oppo and the AVR.
