I have an hdtv with component ports, av1 and av2 ports. and 3 hdmi ports. There is no audio out port. Which is my problem. i have a receiver that I am trying to hook up for surround sound but the receiver doesn't have an hdmi port. The receiver does have an optical port, but tv doesn't. What do I need?

Get your manuals out.

Both your TV and AVR must support ARC (Audio Return Channel). Verify and connect as per instructions.

Barring that, you can connect your components, (Cable Box, DVD, etc.) to your AVR via HDMI and then, your AVR to your TV, also via HDMI.

If neither of those options appeal to you or are not feasible, you may be out of luck.

So I plugged my xbox, dvd player into the avr, but can't go from avr back to tv because of no hdmi port on avr. Is there a switch or converter of some sort to get back to the tv with an hdmi cable? I read the manuals, but no luck. Not familiar in this area

You have HDMI inputs on your AVR but no HDMI outputs? Odd. What make/model is it?

you may not be able to get there from here without upgrading your AVR.

The avr has the red and white plug ins and 2 optical ports. No hdmi port. Would hate to have to sell this avr

We need the model number of your TV.

That receiver is part of an old European HTIB. Where are you located?

That receiver has no HDMI. It has two optical inputs and one coax digital input. It has no modern codecs, only old DTS neo 6 algorithm. It was made long before HDMI and it does not support it.
That unit is to all intense and purposes useless and worthless.

We need the model number of your Apex TV.

If it has an optical out, then could use that. Most modern TVs have a Toslink optical out. They seldom have analog out anymore.

However that receiver really needs to go to the recycling center and you should invest in a modern AVR. That is what you really need to do.

You need a new AVR. See TLS's post above. You're trying to marry ancient junk with modern junk tv (apex).
Sorry, I love shopping on low budget as much as the next guy, but we can't help with miracles. Any workable solution to your issue would probably be much less reliable and more expensive than buying a 2nd hand receiver with hdmi ports
