It depends on the music you are listening to. If you listen to heavy metal, I reckon you could have 100% THD and you would not know the odds!

Well, this is one of those questions that does not have a clear answer.

For amplifier design, the number that I'm typically looking at is 0.1% THD or better.

I strongly disagree with this. It's way more noticeable the more noisy the music is. I can listen to something like plain old rock on my car speakers but as soon as technical death metal comes on the music blurs into a mess whereas on my klipsch at home it sounds very distinct and detailed.

Don't mind TLS.. He thinks the only music on the planet worth listening too is classical.. the rest is noise. I feel sorry for him in this one respect because he is missing out on so much good music that speaks from the heart/soul :)

Sounds like you need a better car stereo.
Yeah, they're just crappy GM strok speakers, but i've noticed this effect with any poor quality speakers. It doesn't have to be metal either, any fast music with a lot of complexity does it.

I find piano (not the electrical keyboard type) to be the most revealing in hearing distortion of all the instruments that I've encountered so far. :)

What you describe doesn't sound like distortion per se, but more like a blown speaker or two, particularly if you play everything at the same volume. Either that, or you're driving the amp into severe clipping.
