Hello guys,
I am looking for recommendations for a receiver to run my backyard sound system. I have a 1/4 acre backyard. When I had the pool installed and the backyard landscaped, I ran and buried [JSC Wire 14 AWG Direct Burial Speaker Wire] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) around the perimeter of the yard.

Around the perimeter of the yard I have connected (4) TIC ASP-120B Architectural Series 120-Watt Exterior Speakers ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and have them set for 10 watt/ 70 volt.

On a separate circuit, on the patio I also have (2) of the same speakers wired with
12AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Oxygen-Free Pure Bare Copper Speaker Wire Cable ( http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_i...seq=1&format=2 ) within 20' of the receiver. These speakers are set to 8ohm.

I have the 14 AWG wire connected to Pyle PCM30A 60 Watts Power Amplifier 70 Volt Output ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) connected to the 70 volt output, as shown in my photo.

To connect the amp to the receiver, I have a Rockford Fosgate RFI2SW Adapts High Level Speaker to Low Level RCA Adapter ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) connected to AUX input on the amp, as shown in the photo.

When I had a Sony STRDN1030 connected to the Amp. The receiver would run for about 10 minutes and then shut off automatically. I assume it was overheating for some reason but did not investigated further. I moved the Sony Receiver inside the house and have had it running my family room entertainment center for the past 2 months without a problem.

Outside on the patio the Amp and receiver are inside a large, well ventilated cabinet under the patio cover. The cabinet never sees direct sunlight because of the patio cover and rarely ever sees ambient temps above 90*F

The reason I have 2 separate circuits is I don't always want to use the 70 volt speakers and the 2 speakers under the patio cover at the same time. I would like to find a receiver that will allow me to run them together sometimes but also allow me to only use the patio speakers.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a economical receiver that can run both my 70-volt system thru the amp and my 8ohm speakers direct to the receiver? I would also like a few HDMI inputs on the receiver so I can connect a Directv receiver and other accessories and a HDMI output to go to our TV.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kinda hard to follow, but it looks like you have the 70-volt amp getting input signal from the Sony’s speaker terminals? If so that’s your shut-down problem. Speaker terminals are for speakers. You can use a set of standard RCA cables to feed a signal from the Sony’s Zone 2 output to the 70-volt amp and you’ll be in business. The other two “separate circuit” speakers can connect to the Sony as you presumably have the now.

By the way, it looks like you have the speaker wire on the 70-volt amp connected backwards. The universal standard for speakers is red is positive (70-volt in your case), and black is negative or common. But as long as you kept the same wiring scheme all the way down to the speakers it’s functionally okay.

Thanks Wayne.

I initially had the amp hooked up as you suggest but I couldn't get the receiver to play Zone 2 output and the speaker terminal output at the same time.

Do you know if the Sony STRDN1030 will allow me to run Zone 2 and speaker terminals at the same time?

Or can you suggest a receiver that you know will allow me to do this?

Thanks!

That’s the first time I’ve ever heard of a receiver not being able to a signal to both zones at the same time. I’d suggest wading through the manual and see if there’s a setting you’ve missed. A common problem with second zones is that it has to have an analog source, so you have to use the component’s analog connections as well as digital.

Zone 2 on that unit only works with an analogue source.
Or you need a receiver with Pre-outs
